STATUS: Jane has said on the WOW board that she is supposed to be a face. But she did slap Roxy Powers' hand away when Roxy tried to shake after a match, and her playing to the crowd during matches seems to be of the type normally associated with heels. She saved McLane from being tabled, which could go either way. I guess she's a face, if she says she is. But she is written with an odd, seemingly unintentional ambiguity.
WRESTLING: Opinions vary widely on this. I personally feel she is pretty good. She takes bumps (including the one through the table), and sells very well. She seems to have a lot of athletic ability, spending a lot of the time in the air for someone her size, and does some holds too. Anyone who can both sell and come up with some offense is pretty good by WOW standards. And she balances on the top rope during her entrance, it's great!
CHARACTER: Jane hasn't been given much of anything besides corny gimmick lines such as "I'll leave you shaken and stirred" and "I'll take you to Double-O-Heaven". Unlike an Ice Cold, it's usually just one or two sentences (and unlike Ice Cold, her lines are not abominably horrendous), so the gimmick has not been pushed past its limits. I always figured Jane didn't speak much because she wasn't really English, but she is convincing me of her Anglicism on the WOW board...who knows, really. Her entrance video is generally considered to be the best in WOW.
LOOKS: She's quite cute, with a very nice face. She doesn't haunt my dreams at night, but she's pretty good. She shouldn't wear the sunglasses; they obscure her pretty face, plus they kind of push the gimmick a little too far.
COMMENTS: A lot of people seem to feel that Jane's gimmick is just too stupid to survive, and others feel that she should be turned heel. I dunno, maybe I'm dense, but I think she's fine the way she is. Once she gets in the ring, you hardly hear about the gimmick anymore, for the most part. Jane is a good mid-level person who can look good when she wins and when she loses. Not everyone can get over to the nth degree and be at the top of the card, so why insist upon it?
If you do want to push her a little more, I could kind of see turning her heel and making her the stereotypical snobby Brit, maybe teaming her with Lana Star. She would be a far better partner for Lana than Patti or Poison, anyway. But, consider this: Supposedly WOW is going to be broadcast in England, in which case, you don't want to make Jane a heel. If anything, if WOW makes it to England, you would want to make her more of a British Bulldog-type flag-waver. (That's assuming of course that she actually is English.)
UPDATES:
2/4/2000 (PPV):
- Jane lost to Tanja, Warrior Woman. Not exactly a
foreboding of a push anytime soon.
