Important Conjunctions

Formation

In addition to the simple conjunctions, conjunctions may be formed by: One, following a preposition with ke. Two, following an adverb with ke. Three, combining other small words.

Dum; dum ke. Time; time ke. Nur se.

During; while. Fearfully; for fear that. Only if.

Ke

Tenses after ke

Ke as noted above means "that" as a subordinating conjunction. Unlike in English, this is never omitted in Ido. Also unlike English are the tenses that follow ke. In Ido, the tense that follows ke is the one that would be used by an observer in the timeframe of the tense given in the main clause. In Ido, the tense used is the one logically required, which does not always match the choice of tense in English. Note the differences in tense in the examples below.

Me vidis, ke el ploras.

I saw the she was crying.

Me savis, ke il venos.

I knew that he would come.

Me savis, ke il ja arivis.

I knew that he had already arrived.

Il dicis, ke se il esus tam alta kam me, il facile facus ito.

He said that if he were as tall as I, he would easily do that.

Se vu esos malada.

If you are ill.

Preparez chambro, pro la kazo se il venus

Prepare a room in case he comes (should come).
