American Buff geese grow fairly rapidly. Most reaching their full
weight around 9 months of age. At 1 year old females start to lay
eggs however they do not lay regularly their first year. Their egg
production is much better their second year. Males at 1 year of age
can fertilize eggs but do not have a very high sperm count until their
second year. I find them to be a very friendly breed. As soon as I
enter the pen they all come running up to he and say Hi. They make
great watchdogs or "watch geese". They notify you the second
they see someone in the yard. However they do not continue to honk
at me if I'm in the yard working after they have said Hi. Their honk
is very deep in tone, not as squeaky as the Toulouse's honk.
