MATHS
+ CHALLENGE = SEVEN BRIGHT KIDS

SEVEN youngsters from a South Tyneside school proved they were top of the
class when they took part in a nationwide maths competition.
The pupils, from St Wilfrid's
Roman Catholic School in Harton Lane, South Shields, taxed their brains as part
of the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, organised by the United Kingdom
Mathematical Trust.
As part of the challenge, students had to answer a multiple choice paper
containing 25 different problems which are aimed at improving pupils'
mathematical thinking.
Year 10 student Timothy Banks walked away with the Best in School title after
receiving a gold certificate, while the six others were all happy with their
silver and bronze awards.
Following his outstanding performance in the challenge, Timothy will now have
the chance to participate in the up and coming International Intermediate
Invitational Contest.
Staff and students are both hoping that Tim's success will eventually lead to
the school's involvement in European and worldwide competition.
Claire Johnson, lead co-ordinator for gifted and talented students at St
Wilfrid's, said: "The challenge was designed to make maths fun and the
questions are based on real life situations.
"We are delighted with the achievements of all the students who took part
and hope that Timothy enjoys participating in further stages of the
challenge."
