German Order of Battle

A German regiment was not the equivalent of a Canadian regiment. A German regiment was the smallest organic unit containing combined arms. That is, a German regiment was the rough equivalent (but somewhat stronger)of a Canadian brigade. Each rifle company had 191 men with 11 light machine guns and 3 5 cm or 8 cm mortars. Each battalion was supported by a field company (heavy weapons company) with at least 8 heavy machine guns (the 12th Field Company had 12 heavy machine guns) and 6 12 cm mortars. In addition each battalion had its own artillery consisting of 8 75 mm guns. While for command purposes there is a rough equivalence, for fighting power the German rifle company outgunned its Allied counterpart.
