Duty Free
(a) The following goods may be imported into Portugal by visitors over 17 years of age from non-EU countries without incurring customs duty or government tax:

200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco; 1 litre of spirits over 22% or 2 litres of spirits up to 22%; 2 litres of wine; 50g of perfume and 250ml of eau de toilette; 500g of coffee or 200g of coffee extract; 100g of tea or 40g of tea extract; further goods up to Esc7500.

(b) Visitors over 17 years of age from EU countries may import goods in the following quantities without incurring customs duty or government tax:

200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco; 1 litre of spirits over 22 % or 2 litres of spirits up to 22%; 2 litres of wine; 50g of perfume and 250ml of eau de toilette; 500g of coffee or 200g of coffee extract; 100g of tea.

Visas: UK, Australian and New Zealand passport holders can stay up to 90 days on production of a valid passport.

Language: Portuguese, though Spanish is widely understood. English is often spoken in major tourist areas.

Currency: The escudo is divided into 100 centavos. The exchange rate is, approximately, 260 esccudos to the pound.

When to visit: Lisbon has mild winters and warm/hot summers. Summer can get crowded: best time is Spring and Autumn.

Getting there: Flights. Express trains run from Madrid and Paris.

Getting around: Use buses, trams and the elvadors. One-day passes are available. For odd journeys, buy tickets in advance from kiosks as they are half the price of those bought on board. Trains to Sintra (50 mins) depart Lisbon’s Rossio Station at approximately, 20-minute intervals.
