The Berninghaus "Hercules" Barber Chair, 1901 |

Above, this image shows how the Berninghaus barber chair was modified
for the George Pal Time Machine 1960..
Eugene Berninghaus was born July 12 1845, he was a German immigrant
who began creating these incredibly ornate barber chairs and other
furniture in Cincinnati around 1875 and established a thriving business..
The "Hercules" had a hydraulic mechanism to rotate or change the height
of the chair, it was made in a variety of materials such Mahogany, Maple, Walnut
and cherry wood, the seats were finished in either mohair plush or leather..
These chairs are increasingly rare and highly sought after, there are other
Berninghaus styled chairs to choose from but its the "Hercules" chair
that was used for the 1960 George Pal Time Machine Prop in particular..

The Berninghaus "Hercules" Barber Chair, Modifications |

Above, some rare images of the Time Machine before its auction in 1970..
Modifications had to be made to the Hercules in order to fit it to the
Time Machine, the central pedestal was removed including the
hydraulic mechanism and four standard legs were created to stand
the chair upon. This of course bought the chair much lower to the
floor meaning they had to discard the original footrest in favor
of a red padded cushion. The original headrest was removed and
replaced with the old footrest instead, they literally swapped them
around. The front rail of the chair was replaced with a new wooden
rail and the padded arm rests were configured so they could be lifted
via the rear hinge, the overall change is quite dramatic..

When Bob Burns acquired the original Time Machine in 1979 from a thrift
shop it was missing the original Barber chair, so a new one had to be
fashioned from the original blueprints. Tom Scherman, Lynn Barker and
Marc Richards had the pleasure of recreating this much needed piece
of the machine and they did an awesome job..
