The Time Machine, The Discovery and Restoration

In 1979 Tom Scherman discovered the Time Machine in a Orange County
California thrift shop (Antique Shop), he immediately told Bob Burns about
it and Bob was able to acquire the Machine although there was great
disappointment in regard to its condition.

Above, the Time Machine arriving and unloaded, as you can see there
were a lot of problems, in the picture on the right you can see the replacement
console which is barely holding onto the rails.

Photograph on the left was taken by Don Coleman for the documentary
"The Journey Back", You can visit Don and Mary's website at this address:

Above, a close up of the replacement console made in 1970, the end caps
were made from pie tins and Christmas lights on top, you can see by
the picture on the right that the entire chair is missing, apparently sold
to an anonymous buyer years earlier for supposed price of $600!..

Above, the engine pods were in terrible condition, as you can see this
one has more or less fallen apart due to the excessive heat created by
the high wattage bulbs used in place of the original lights.. You can see
the small cooling fan inside which obviously didn't help much..

Above, views of the dish drive assembly, still in fairly good condition..
The mechanism is in a sealed unit so it would have been unnecessary
to pull this part of the machine apart..

Worm and Bevel Gear

The gold orb (Ball) contains a worm gear or possibly a bevel gear..
(Diagram Above), although claims state the mechanism is a worm unit
it is my own personal belief that its more likely to be a bevel drive..

FACT: The dish movement is powered by a vintage BBQ spit motor..

thing to do is disassemble the machine as much as possible..

Above, a brand new console is built using the original MGM blue prints..
Note that the insignia in the console's center reads "Manufactured by H.
George Wells", this was George Pals little tribute to the acclaimed writer..

Above, the original dish was fine and did not require any maintenance,
although quite warped this was an attribute that stayed with the dish
since it was first created. Constructed from fiberglass the dish developed
a warp during the filming of the movie and runners had to be placed
behind it during rotation to try and prevent it from wobbling. Notice the
little knobs that appear all around the dish's edge, there are 348 in total..

The original Berninghaus Barber chair was missing, so a new one had to be
fashioned from the blueprints..

The Time Machine was completely restored within three months and just in
time for a special Halloween show. A set was constructed to represent the
journey of the traveler from past to future with a cast of morlocks adding
to the atmosphere. George Pal and his wife were there and George even
took the Time Machine for a ride, he looks very happy to be there..
