Headlight burning brightly, pushing away the darkness,
Cacoones in a soft cone of light I feel safe, at peace,
The road rushes towards me,
Flashing black and white and back to black,
Shiny like a great silver snake,
Its eyes flashing red and white, white and red,
The cold wind pours over me, drowns me, makes me come alive.
A dozen miles pass under the wheels, then a dozen more,
As slowly, ever slowly the sky turns red then pink and yellow,
The dawn begins and to me it seems that the world has been reborn,
Early mist swirls around me as the sun bathes the hills with fire,
More miles pass, the motor hums, the sky is blue above me,
I pass a town, an early riser smiles and waves.
I stop for fuel in the middle of some distant place,
Some people stare, some smile, most don't,
Hopping back on the bike I laugh a their small ideals,
They cannot know the joy of two matched halves uniting,
My bike purrs again, its black wheels spinning round and round,
The seat moulds to me, comfortable like an old glove,
Controls respond to my caress as a lover would,
As the day grows older and the road I travel longer.
The windscreen paints a picture and a thousand flowers blossom,
Soft sunlight falls upon me and the wind blows gently onwards,
The smell of soft earth and rain devours me,
And I shout with pure joy at being alive,
As the road goes on forever, and I smile, for I am free.
The wind and dust are my friends,
The end of the road my home.
