Introduction
There is a not a definitive highest points / least moves walkthrough because of the random appearance of the Hooded Figure and the random and often arbitrary events.
Though this walkthrough does not visit every area it is played in a reasonably natural way as an adventurer might who had done some preliminary exploration, and who wanted to deal with sources of danger expeditiously.

Part 1 - Let's go South
The game starts at the bottom of the Endless Stairs. Get the Brass Lantern. Go South through the Junction, the Creepy Crawl, and the Foggy Room to the Lake Shore. Drop the Lamp, though I don't think you will need it again.
Enter the Lake, and swim West to the Western Shore. Go South into the Scenic Vista where you will see a Torch and a Table.
Wait till the numbers on the wall change to II, then touch the Table and you will be taken to Room 8 in the Zork 2 adventure. Get the Grue Repellant, then Wait until you are taken back.
When the numbers on the wall change to III touch the Table and you will be taken to the Damp Passage. Drop the Torch, and Wait until you are taken back to the Scenic Vista. Save the Game.
Go back North to the Western Shore and Enter the Lake. The Grue Repellant will drop from your hand. Go Down and Get All to retrieve it and an Amulet. If you take too long the Roc or Great Fish will get you.
Go South to the South Shore, and then South again into a Pitch Black Room. Spray the Grue Repellant on Me, then go West into the Key Room. Get the Key, then take the cover off the Manhole and go Down on to the Aqueduct. Go North past the High Arch to the Water Slide to the Damp Passage where you will find the Torch. Get it.

Part 2 - Let's go West
Go West through the Junction and West again through the Barren Area to the Cliff.
Get the Bread. Go Down the Rope to the Cliff Ledge. Tie the Rope to the Chest. Wait if necessary, and the Man will haul the Chest to the top of the Cliff. Wait some more, perhaps several time, and the Man will come back and throw the rope down. Get it, and he will haul you up. He will then give you the Staff, which is what this rigmarole was all about, and leave.
Go Down the Rope again to the Cliff Ledge, and then Down again to the Cliff Base. Save the game, not because there is any danger but because the next step is very tricky.
Go South onto the beach of the Flathead Ocean. Every time I reached this point the Viking Ship and its Sailor appeared. Your mileage may vary. Say :"Hello Sailor" and he will throw a Vial on to the beach. Get the Vial. Save the game because the next step is very tricky and there is some danger.
Go East into the Land of Shadows. Sooner or later a Hooded figure will appear, and the Sword will appear in your hand. If he takes his time in coming then mooch around East or West between the Flathead Ocean and the Eastern End of the Land of Shadows.
When he does appear Fight (not kill) figure until the display shows that he is badly wounded and defenceless. Then Get the Hood and the Cloak. If you leave it too long or miss your cue either he will kill you or you will kill him and the Hood and Cloak will disappear. I really don't know what that will do to the game, and would appreciate Feedback.
Sometime in the last sequence an Earthquake should have a happened. If it has not mooch around as described above. When you have the Hood and Cloak and the Earthquake has occurred it is time to move on.

Part 3 - Let's go East
Go East into the Creepy Crawl, East again into the Tight Squeeze, and East again into the Crystal Grotto. Then go South into the northern part of the Royal Hall and South again until you come to the Great Door.
Go East into the Museum Entrance. Open the Stone Doors, and go East again into the Jewel Room. Note that the date the Crown Jewels (including the Ring) were installed was 777.
Go back West into the Museum Entrance, open the Wooden Doors, and go North into the Technology Museum. Look at the various parts of the Gold Machine. Note that the current date is 948 GUE and that there is a small compartment under the seat. Push the Gold Machine South and then West into the Jewel Room - if you don't you will find yourself outside the locked Stone Doors when you travel back in time. Get in the machine. Set the dial to 776. Push the Button. The machine and all your other possessions have disappeared. Get the Ring, and Wait as many times as necessary for the Guards to leave. Open the Stone Doors and Go West; Open the Wooden Doors and go North into the Museum of Technology where you will find the Gold Machine. Put the Ring Under the Seat. Get into the Gold Machine, set the dial to 948, and press the button. Look under the Seat, and the Ring will put itself on your finger. All your other possessions are safe in the Jewel Room, so leave them there until you have worked through the Royal Puzzle.
