"The Confessions of BoB" or Secrets of the Books of Blood p a r t t w o ========================= by //. i d n i g h t ============================ - foreword - I've picked up my pen again to expand on the "Clue Book" for BoB (Books of Blood) and as I ponder how to continue it seems logical to write it one chapter at a time, one map at a time with a section at the end outlining the differences between the "Epic" version and the stand alone module variations. I've also realized that as I made the modules themselves I was (in alot of ways) making them for myself and even knowing ALL the tips tricks, and secrets it's interesting and exciting (or at least I think so). Therefore what I'm presenting is almost a complete Walk-Through of the Game with a "Secrets" section at the end of each Map. If you want to make some discoveries on your own skip the Secrets sections... and even though I will be revealing Many of the Important Events and things to do and find, there are Still a Number of things you'll have to find out on your own. ********************** ============================= FIRST BLOOD! ================================ BoB's first quest was designed to develop the Basic Skills needed to become a successful Dungeon Master Adventurer as well as throw you into the action and intrigue from the very beginning. From square one there are desicions to be made, a locked door, a secret wall and a magic portal. Getting Started: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Start by talking to the Old Man. He'll give you a Free Ressurection leaving the Book of Blood where you found him. The locked door will not open until you've learned a certain spell so don't waste any time and effort trying to open it... it'll open by itself when you've learned the spell. The Old Man appears again at the other end of the chamber... you might as well clear him out by choosing N) Never Speak of this Again since if you DO decide to commit suicide later on you can press 'S' at any time. You are then turned to face North, if it's not obvious...it's a Secret Door. Two Steps forward and you're standing in a Magic Portal that leads to the Sanctuary. (If you take one step and face West you'll get a glimpse of the first "BOSS" you'll face in First Blood, but you will still be forced into the Portal. At this point you can go a number of different ways so I'll continue from here with an Outline of Each Map as your Guide. THE SANCTUARY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The first portal you enter leads to the Sanctuary, but since it requires a light source and one step forward puts you into another portal this might not be the first place you explore, but is a location you will return to many times during the course of your adventures. If you choose Not to enter the portal and wander through the dark a few steps you'll pick up a Hooded Lantern! (that has unlimited charges) Equip it and Use it... now you'll be able to see the Single Door in this narrow Hallway. Through the Door the Old Man appears again welcoming you to his Sanctuary. He tells you he has created a Library and Gallery for you to Use and Enjoy, then he Vanishes. THE LIBRARY: ^^^^^^^^^^^^ You'll pick up a List of Books when you enter the Library. Every book on that list IS in the Library though you might not be able to find them all at this time and if you try to look at the List again... they've Vanished! When you first start wandering around looking for books you can't seem to find any, then suddenly they are everywhere! However, if you wander around for too long they all seem to Vanish again... the Library is Empty! The books you find have information, insights, "cheats", and one has a very special purpose. There are also a couple of books that you won't be able to find until later in the game. THE GALLERY: ^^^^^^^^^^^^ There is also a Gallery with 10 "paintings" that display the various Items you'll need to gather to complete First Blood as well as the various "Boss" monsters that protect each Item. There is also a "Special" Portrait of the First Warrior of Blood. THE INNER SANCTUM: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Within the Inner Sanctum are several Portals and Altars. The main portal returns you to the Training Grounds just outside the locked door. There are actually 4 of these portals in the Sanctuary in different "convienent" locations and 2 other portals that become accessible later in the game that serve as the passage to the Arena of Blood. There are 3 altars in the Inner Sanctum also. The most obvious one(s) will cast the Breath of Life Spell once a Day. If you are wearing the Warrior's Ring will ask you if you want to Pray for Regeneration. If you say Yes it will rechage ALL of the items in your inventory. However, you should not Use this option too many times or the Altar will be Silenced. The only way to restore it is to go to Confession at the Altar of Sin, but at the same time you'll have to pay your dues... >>>SECRETS OF THE SANCTUARY<<< ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Until you reach a higher level you can pick-up and sell the Hooded Lantern up to 8 times a day for some Easy Money... Though it's only 250 gold a day at Level 1 it's not bad and can come in handy. Once you've learned your Level 1 Spells you'll be given the opportunity to Learn the Level 3 Spell Mystic Shield when you read the book Mystic Shield. When you view the picture of the First Warrior of Blood in the Gallery, the Spell Eternal Flame is cast which is a continuous Light Spell that works until it is dispelled by Darkness or the Spell Mage Lite becomes active. There are 2 Secret Doors in the Inner Sanctum. One leads to the Library and One leads to the Gallery. The Wall in the Gallery with the Warrior's image is also a Secret door. This creates a "Shortcut" to the Portals everytime you use the power of the Warriors Ring. The mysterious "What are you Looking For?" Question is really just a quick reset for the books in the Library to make them reappear without having to leave the Sanctuary... but it will also display a few different messages if you reply "ANSWERS" You must also Return to the Sanctuary for the Final Item of First Blood! Though it is really out in the open it can be easily missed. Just look on your map for the '!' when the time is right. *************************** THE TRAINING GROUNDS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MAIN STREET: ^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Northern Corridor (Main Street) gives easy access to all the common DM Areas: Magic Shoppe, Equipment Shoppe, Review Board, The Guilde, the Vault, and the Healers Temple. The only thing you may encounter here is another player who may have carelessly (or intentionally) quit playing in the open. THE WARRIOR'S GRAVEYARD: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ To the South of the "One-Way" Door is the Warrior's Graveyard. There are a number of Statues that are Grave Markers and a number of Secret Doors. If you pass through them the Graveyard extends the full length of the map to the first portal you found at the Southern end. There are also a number of Unusual Jars scattered in the Area... drink them if you wish or smash them when you are given the opportunity to do so. Normally they'll help you, but like a number of things you'll find in BoB if you abuse them they have a tendancy to start doing bad things. THE HALL OF BLOOD: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Western corridor is where your Combat Training begins. The Old Man will appear once again and give you a Free Ressurection if you do not have one. Down and around the Hall of Blood you'll fight monsters, find jars, gold, statues, portals, Temples, and finally the Old Man and the Master Key! ****SPECIAL NOTE**** One thing you MUST keep in mind is that when looking for an Item you should BE SURE you have a SPACE in your INVENTORY for it in Advance! If you don't you won't REALLY pick it up even though the game says you Have!! THE WARRIOR'S RING: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Once you've gotten the Master Key return to the Locked Door by the Guilde and Open the Door. The Key will vanish but the door will always be open. Search this Area for the Warrior's Ring, it is the First Item to find for First Blood! You must also find the Stairway to the Cavern of Blood. >>>>>SECRETS of THE TRAINING GROUNDS<<<<< ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THE GREEN JARS: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This potion cast the spell HEAL. However it will force a random encounter if you drink it more than 5 times in a row. It will dissappear once you've learned the spell. THE BLUE JARS: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This potion restores 5 spell points. It too will force a random encounter if you drink it more then 5 times in a row and dissappears when you reach Spell Level 4. THE BROWN JARS: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Every time you drink a Brown potion it will reset the counters for Green and Blue Jars and also cures the condition of Poison. If passed up 4 times you can and SHOULD smash it. It will then turn into Jar Shards. JAR SHARDS: ^^^^^^^^^^^ Stepping on Jar Shards resets the counters for the Jars, Statues, and the Altar near the Stairway to the Cavern of Blood. SUPER SECRET JAR TIP: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ When ever you find 2 Brown Jars next to each other walk back and forth choosing NOT to drink them until you are asked if you want to smash it... Then smash it into jar shards and you'll have some control over the Jars. STATUES: ^^^^^^^^ The Statues change as you pass them. Some appear as markers and others appear to be watching you. Once you've learned the Mystic Shield Spell and have 100 kills the Phantoms begin to attack you. When you have the Warriors Ring you'll also be attacked by an Insane Demon. At first it is a little dangerous, but before you know it it becomes a quick and easy way to gain experience! THE MASTER KEY: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ It's not common knowledge but the Master Key can be used! Equip it and use it to be teleported right to the door it unlocks! THE ALTAR AND STAIRS TO THE CAVERN: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Altar in the Training Grounds can be used as many times as is needed. Usually it will cast 4 spells: Mage Lite, Mystic Shield, Wing of Wonder, & the Magic Compass to aid you for a short time in the Dungeons. The Stairs down are due West of the Altar through a Secret Door. THE WARRIOR'S RING: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ When you win the fight with the City Guards and the Phantom the Spirit of Blood Appears and ask, "What is a Warrior's Greatest Weapon?" The Answer must be typed exactly right to work and the Answer is in the Book of Blood where you started the game or the book First Blood in the Library. The Answer is in BOLD FACE letters in the book so it's easy to find. For those who just need to know the Answer is "HIS WITS". ************************ THE CAVERNS OF BLOOD ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you do not have a ressurection the Old Man appears again one step into the Caverns to give you Another Free ressurection. However, if you keep trying to enter without one he will eventually get annoyed with you and finally quit coming to your "rescue". The Second Item needed for First Blood, the Amulet of Sight, is hidden in this Dungeon. Before you find it there seems to be a presence here that threatens your sanity and disorients you. There are also several Old Chest filled with Gold you may find, but there is a chance they will be trapped and the Trap Zap Spell will not protect you from them though the Wing of Wonder Will. If you have the Warrior's Ring you'll find several Temples of Healing and once you'll found the Amulet there is a Warrior's Guilde, Magic Shoppe, and Equipment Shoppe near the stairway to the Catecombs that you can use. THE AMULET OF SIGHT: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ In some ways finding the Amulet is a little tricky. There are no riddles or questions you must answer. If you win the Special Encounter with three Insane Demons you will be given the Amulet of Sight (provided you have an empty space in your Inventory) But you must approach the secret square from the right direction or you will be "Overcome with Maddness" and warped to a distant location from the Amulet. However, when this happens you should look at your map, you'll not only see the location now but you'll see the direction you should approach it from! >>>>> SECRET SHORTCUT <<<<< ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Once you have the Amulet you'll not want to waste much time in the Caverns. You can stay in the Warrior's Guilde and Regenerate Spell points in the Magic Shoppe near the stairway to the Catecombs, but there's a shortcut for those times when you need to return to the surface for the Review Board or have returned to the Sanctuary. Starting from the Entrance to the Caverns walk to the Northern most edge of the Map and walk due East the full extent of the Map. Just outside the Temple of Healing and to the North step through the Secret Door and you are just outside the Magic Shoppe. One step North and one step East and you are at the top of the Stairs to the Catecombs of Blood. *************************** THE CATECOMBS OF BLOOD ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Catecombs serve as a place to hone your skills. The stairs to the Dungeon of Blood are one step to the south and it is tempting to just keep moving deeper into the Dungeons. However, there is a marked increase in the both the monsters and wander difficulty if you proceed without exploring this dungeon. There are more Treasures and traps scattered in this area and you'll also discover the Abyss of Blood. THE ABYSS OF BLOOD: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Once you've completed First Blood and recieve "The Mark", the Abyss becomes the Portal to the Labyrnth of Blood. It now will tell you the Blood Sword is in the Dungeon of Blood but has one other minor power. If you've abused the Altar in the Sanctuary...It will rip the Warrior's Ring from your Hand! It's not really hard to get it back, but a pain and and embarassment since the whole ordeal will be logged into the News! >>>>> SECRET SHORTCUT TO THE ABYSS <<<<< ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Once you complete First Blood you'll want a quick easy path to the Abyss. From the Entrance to the Catecombs walk East Until you Hit the Wall (Ouch!) then walk South through a few secret doors until you hit another Wall, then walk East until you are gazing into the Abyss of Blood! *************************** THE DUNGEON OF BLOOD ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Next Item for First Blood, and the Best Weapon in BoB, is hidden in this dungeon. You'll also have to Search for the stairs to Blood Lust. They are both well hidden and you'll have to use all the skills you've developed to find them. If you don't have the Elfin Plate yet, there is also a chest you may find where you can get it. This Dungeon has a variety of Traps that will plauge you with Darkness, Falling Rocks, Pit Traps, and Magic Drains. It's a good idea to keep the Wing of Wonder active at all times. You will be able to see some of them on your map marked with a '~' but it is very strange in that they don't always appear on the map... sometimes they're marked, sometimes they're not. There is also a Magic Shoppe in this Dungeon near the stairs to Blood Lust. If you've found the Shoppe but not the stairs you're just a few steps away. THE BLOOD SWORD: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The Best Sword you'll ever find in the current versions of BoB is guarded by a group of Evil Nightmares. If you've honed your skills enough it should be easy to defeat them then open all the chests you find after you've won. The most difficult part is finding the square that is being guarded. >>>>> SECRETS OF THE DUNGEON <<<<< ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ There is no real Secret or Shortcut in this Area, so for those who don't have the patience or stamina to find the Blood Sword on thier own, I'll reveal the location. But you should consider that the encounters below in Blood Lust and beyond get increasingly more difficult and intense. The experience and skills you develop in this Dungeon searching for the Blood Sword will serve you well as your adventures continue. Okay for those that insist on knowing the location of the Blood Sword, it is located at X:8, Y:22. *************************** BLOOD LUST ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The final Dungeon of First Blood doesn't look quite like a normal Dungeon but it still requires a light source and spell points don't regenerate. The encounters here are the toughest yet (unless you've been to the Arena Grounds) and you'll begin to be attacked by Lost Souls that continue to appear in large numbers from here through the end of the Books of Blood. The final goals and events will be found here. The Talisman of Blood and the event where you will recieve the Mark of First Blood. There are a few minor traps in this Dungeon, but the greatest Dangers are the random encounters themselves. You'll need a strong character and know how to use your spells to succeed. THE TALISMAN OF BLOOD: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ You must carefully Search Blood Lust. When you are near the Talisman you'll know it because you'll be confronted by All the Bosses displayed in the Gallery. You'll have to defeat them (which is actually easier than some of the random encounters you'll face) and once again the Spirit of Blood will appear and present you with a question you must answer correctly. Just like the Question you answered to get the Warrior's Ring the Answer can be found in the book First Blood in BOLD FACE letters. It's a simple answer and I think it's almost obvious, but if you get it wrong go to the Sanctuary and you'll find it in the book First Blood! Once you have the Talisman you'll have to take it to the Old Man to Recieve the Mark of First Blood, but where is he? THE WARRIOR'S BLOOD: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Search the Sanctuary for him and you'll find the Mage from the Magic Shoppe waiting for you. He tells you the Old Man has been abducted and taken to Blood Lust. He also gives you the Warrior's Blood. (Yes, one last item you must carry to complete First Blood!) You're Inventory is almost full. By this time you should be a Great Warrior and the need to carry extra any extra items should be minimal, but there is a slot of two remaining. THE MARK OF FIRST BLOOD: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ You've almost completed First Blood. There are no "Bosses" or Questions to Answer to recieve the Mark of First Blood. All that remains is to Find the Old Man in Blood Lust. If you've been over the square where he is it will be relatively easy since it too is displayed on your map with a '!'. When you find him there will be a little bit of Fanfare and the logging in the News of your completion of First Blood! You will then be given a choice (common to all BoB chapters and modules), wheither to Etch your name in the Hall of Heroes for all Time or to Live on to Continue your adventures. (You'll have to choose Live to continue onto chapters 2 & 3). If you choose to Record your name in the Hall of Heroes the game is over and your name is recorded in the Hall of Heores. If you choose to Live all the items you've gathered to complete First Blood are removed (though you can easily go get them again) and you find yourself back in the Training Grounds where you began your Adventure. If you pick up the Book of Blood it has a different text with a short discription of All the Quest in BoB. You can now Enter the Arena as well as the Abyss which is the passage to the Labyrnth of Blood! You are now a True Warrior of Blood! But there are Still many Challenges and Great Adventures before you in the Arena of Blood as well as Ancient Spells to Learn in the Labyrnth! >>>>> SECRETS OF BLOOD LUST <<<<< ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I've revealed Most of what you need to complete First Blood,I hesitate to reveal the exact location of the Talisman and where you'll recieve the Mark of First Blood. But I will reveal the Answer to the Spirit of Blood's Question. "What is Essential to Become a Great Warrior?" : COURAGE Okay, for those that MUST know the Secret Locations... The Talisman will be found at X:22,Y:4. You Recieve the Mark of First Blood at X:22,Y:22. Go ahead... Use the Teleport Scroll... if you Dare!*************************** PRIMARY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BOOKS OF BLOOD: THE EPIC & THE STAND-ALONE VERSION OF FIRST BLOOD! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Though most of the game seems very similar there are Major Differences. First of all the Armor protects you more in the stand-alone and the Mystic Shield Spell is more powerful. You'll also find you that advancement of Levels come with much less experience. The stand-alone doesn't have the expanded spells, monsters, items, or graphics, but is still very good. The dungeon levels are easier primairly using the generated dungeons with little editing. There are no traps or treasures in the dungeons either. Not all the books on the list can be found and there are no portals to the Arena or Labyrnth. There is no altar in the Training Grounds and the Jars, Statues, and Books are handled differently... WARNING they can cause strange ailments for no apparent reason... it is best to choose Yes every time you come across them and only wander in the Graveyard long enough to find the Small Shield! Generally the stand-alone version of First Blood is much easier than the first Quest in Books of Blood but is a good intro version for first time DM players and can probably be completed even if DM is unregistered. *************************** ---- Parting Words ---- This concludes the walk-through of chapter one in the Books of Blood Series. It covers Most of what you'll find and everything you need to know to complete it. Even knowing all the Secrets it is a Challenging and Exciting Adventure. The following chapters take it to even greater levels of intensity with tougher monsters and very challenging situations. I've used alot of the Classic D&D themes in First Blood, but the following chapters I think are more Unique and Distinct giving BoB even more of an identity of it's own with even more Secrets and Events packed into each Map to given even the most experienced DM player and D&D player hours of exciting game play. I hope it's as fun for you as it has been for me. For now though I'm setting down my pen and returning to the real world, but I hope to be back soon to continue the "Confessions of BoB" with the Secrets of chapter two: The Arena of Blood. Have Fun! --//. i d n i g h t ============================================================================ Books of Blood DM Series by Mike Collard
