Site Information:

Thou there are a lot of nice sites on the WWW that take full advantage of all the Latest HTML extensions, Java, etc., etc., I've choosen to keep it simple (yet visually pleasing I hope) using minimal graphics on most pages for Quick Loading with Quick Links to the Main Pages of Interest in the Realm. I am using Windows Notepad as my HTML editor and the "HOME PAGE" Home Page as my Guide.

In the past I used text based browsers whenever I needed to more than just "Surf" the Web but with all the "Trick" sites it is becoming more and more difficult to Navigate on the WWW without the latest browser and I am put off by sites that send a message "Update your Browser" or "Come Out of the Dark Ages, Man!" Contrary to popular belief there are many people that cannot afford the most current PC or run the current software or browser. Therefore, I've designed and formated this site so it maybe easily viewed by anyone using ANY Browser!

As of 2/16/98 I've moved into the Geocities and will continue to add features since I view this as a work in progress. Primairily Reflections of my Obsessions with BBSing and Online Games as well as some "Pseduo Programs" I've Created and Wish to Share:

The FX Sound System Add-Ons using RIP 2.x features to Add Sound to L.O.R.D. (plus IGMs), Vampires: Children of Darkness, NY 2008 and More! I've also created some of the BEST Dungeon Master Modules Available!

BBS Ramblings:

Midnight's Realm BBS -- fido 1:301/5 (505)254-9415
Located in Albuquerque, NM the BBS has been online since 4-1-94
I've put alot of time and effort into creating a Unique BBS with some of the Best Graphics (Both RIP and ANSI) and Games that have been customized to include FX Sound.

I've been a user, co-sysop, and sysop of BBSs since before the term "Surf-the Net" ever existed and began using the internet when most people were using lynx type (text-only) bowsers and an e-mail program like pine or elm. Mosaic was the "hot" graphic interface just being developed.

Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) were the primary source of online entertainment and the Free Exchange of Information and Ideas. Though the internet began as a means for government and educational institutions to easily exchange information over the past 5 or more years it has experienced a explosive growth and commercialization which has both good and bad consequence.

As people have been drawn to the Internet their has been a decline in BBSing not only those who left BBSs for the Internet but many new people that don't even know they exist. Though BBSs may never have the popularity they once had I believe they still have something to offer that cannot be found "Surfing" the Web.

Ramblings about Online Games:

There are literally Hundreds of Online Games I could cover on this page but that would be an very difficult task so what you'll find here are some I consider "Classics", Unique Games, Personal Favorites, as well as links that can be used to find other games and IBBS Leagues.
(I must admit you'll find I am a bit bias in my picks and you won't find any card games or board games like scrabble or yatzee... no trivia game either)

I've been hooked on games for as long as I can remember and, believe it or not, my first experience with a computer game was a very crude version of PONG on a HUGE mainframe in the middle of the New Mexico desert...
Though I've loved games forever my real obsession didn't really kick in until I started calling BBSs and playing Door Games. Even though they didn't have the graphics or arcade qualities of game systems or platform games the fact that I was playing with and against other human beings and not against a computer or program was the real attraction and kept me coming back. I'm still a game addict and there are some really awesome new games that have come out over the last few years I still love to play BBS doors.

Ramblings about Graphics:

I'd say graphics is probably one of my first loves. Since the time I could hold my first crayon I've been trying to leave my mark. My interest in graphics and art extends all the way from comic books to the fine arts and everything inbetween. I've tried my hand at everything from illustration to automotive airbrush designs and even won a couple of awards for charcoal drawing from WNMU in the 70s.

For the last several years my interest has been centered around Online Graphics, which is what the focus of this page is. Specifically ASCII, ANSI, RIP, F/X DDO, and MAX Graphics. I will eventually expand into Web graphics and resources.

It may seem a little odd that a "Graphics" Page is lacking graphics, but that was intentional so that my main pages will load quickly and work well on any browser including text only. But as my site develops this page will lead to some pages that I hope to make visually stimulating and intense.

FX System Ramblings:

I've always been RIP Fan(atic) and started playing with it right away, first as a co-SysOp creating Logins and Adds and then starting my own BBS as an outlet to present the BEST RIP in the Area. There was a decent following of it for awhile but it did drop off right about the time of the release of RIPterm 2.2. Still I was excited about all the New Graphic and sound support it offered and purchased RIPaint 2.2 as soon as it was released.

Anxiously awaiting the release of some doors that used it's new capabilities I keep my eyes and ears opened but the few offerings were a big disappointment. I only found 2 and they required major downloading of "icons" and sound files.

At this point I got tired of waiting and figured out how to add sound to existing RIP 1.54 graphics and decided I'd put together a "versatile" sound archive (of about 1meg) that I could use with all my RIP screens and figured out how to add sound to the RIP in L.O.R.D. Thus was born LORD FX and the FX Sound System, which has continued to grow into a number of different FX Add-Ons.

When I first released LORD FX I thought I might ask for a little money... and I figured the best place to release it would be into sites on the WWW where RIP was still being talked about and used. But withing 48 hours I started recieving angry e-mail "How can you charge me to do that?! I could have done it MYSELF!!" My response was to say "Then why haven't you done it?" and to make ALL the FX System Add-Ons FREE!
In all reality it IS very easy to do and even though I've been laughed at and put down about being a RIP enthusiast, I haven't let it get me down too much. I've made the FX System Add-Ons readily available for any and all to use as they wish. I also want to tell SysOps how they can easily add FX Sound or thier very own Custom Sounds to ANY RIP Screen simply and easily using nothing more than a Text Editor!

Dungeon Master Ramblings:

In my Opinion (IMHO) John Dailey's Dungeon Master is one of the BEST Online Games to come out in along time. Not only is it a Refreshing change of pace from the Standard Text based, menu driven games that are modeled after Seth Able's "master-piece", but it is a Game Engine designed to run individule modules created with the DM Construction set which make the number and variety of potential games almost endless! DM isn't limited to online systems either and can easily be set-up for "local" play on a minimal system.

The addition of IGMs (or whatever a door author chooses to call the In Game Add-Ons) has inspired alot of people to create add-ons or games within games. The DMCS is not unlike that with the exception that (without ANY programing knowledge) it is now possible to create an Entire Game! Not only that, but John has offered to give FREE REGISTRATIONS (for both the DM Engine and Construction Set) to Anyone who creates an Original DM Module of their own! As more people discover this great game and make their modules to get the Free Registrations the available module list is sure to grow with as wid a variety of games to be played as their are people to play them.

Ramblings about BoB:

I was hooked on Dungeon Master from its initial release. It was the type of RPG game I'd always enjoyed in the past only it could be set-up as a door on my BBS and it was Modular. I was anxious for the release of more modules. Already familiar with this type of game, I jumped right into it and moved quickly through the "Adventures of Bob the Magician" module until being unregistered slowed me down. I tried the other 2 modules that came with the game but they were difficult and frustrating... I couldn't ever get very far in them. I picked up Dan Shore's "The Underground Hunt" as soon as it was released and played it alot too though I never completed it either.

I briefly looked at the Construction Set and thought I'd like to make a module of my own, but at this time I was buzy making FX Add-Ons for RIP games and it took second place to my current projects. I wanted to register it eventually but there were other things that had to come first.

I kept an eye out for New modules and visited John's site regularly. When I saw his offer for FREE REGISTRATIONS for Original DM modules that was all the motivation I needed to try my hand at building one and I dived into it head first! Within 2 weeks I was sending First Blood! to John for consideration....which has since evolved into a whole Series of Modules.

To see how I approached building that first module read the section The "Birth" of BoB. I hope to write a whole "How to Build a DM Module" page soon. In the meantime, I hope this short text will help some of the would-be module makers get over the initial "hump" of getting started on their own mods. I'm still anxiously waiting to see and play new mods and I hope this will help.

Ramblings about VGA Planets:

VGA Planets was one of the first reasons I ever set-up my BBS. I started playing it on Terror's Zone when I was a Co-Sysop at the Coffee Shop and as I was persistant to learn the game I got hooked! But the hosting wasn't really up to par... so I started playing with hosting and set-up After Midnight BBS from 12am to 5am and managed to hook a couple of players and hosted a couple of games through e-mail and have been a host and BBS ever since. Hosting on the Internet manually did take some work, but now that I have this site the games are open again to Net Players.

My games are paticularly suited for Newbies and Beginners, but welcomes Experienced Players. Go to the VGAP Host Page to browse and\or join one of the current games in the Realm.

The Rambling Host:

If you are new to VGA Planets jump to the VGAP Info Page to find out more.
With so many Games available on the Internet, Why Join a Game in the Realm?
I've been hosting games for about 4 years now through my BBS and have a few very dedicated players. I always have a game that's Ideal for New Players and offer as much help and suggested utilities as I can. Games run even if all slots are not filled and though human competition is the ideal opponent, we've found that the various Cplayers have helped us to learn some valuable techniques and will be present in all untaken race positions. Games can also be joined at anytime (if races are available) and hope they'll all fill up.
