Ten years ago, a white trapper names Jimmy Dawes and an Inuit Alaskan
named Kalmaku discovered a gold mine in the far north. Dawes offered to return to the U.S.
to raise money to work the minem so the two made a map of the area, a map they then split
between them to cement their partnership. Shortly thereafter, Kalmaku fell ill and died,
passing his half of the map to his son, Thomas. Dawes never returned to Alaska, so Thomas,
whose tribe was poor and needed the revenue from the mine, went to California to search
for Dawes, taking a job at Ferris Aircraft as a mechanic in order to support himself.
There, he picked up the short-lived and unintentionally derogatory nickname
Pieface and worked closely with test pilot Hal Jordan (Green Lantern II).
After a time, Thomas half of the map was stolen, and Jordan changed into his Green
Lantern identity to help Thomas track down both map halves, thus allowing Thomas to denote
the mine to his tribe. During the course of the adventure, Thomas recognized the
similarity of Green Lanterns and Hal Jordans fighting styles and discovered
Jordans double identity; Jordan trusted Thomas with the secret.
Over the years, Thomas assistedGreen Lantern countless times and served as his
biographer by recording Jordans adventurers in a special casebook
protected from prying eyes by Jordans power ring. Eventually, he married his
childhood sweetheart, Tegra, and later left Ferris to open up his own service station,
which under his skilled hands blossomed into a major chain of stations until an oil crisis
bankrupted him. Thomas then returned to Ferris, becoming an independent engineer and
contractor when he developed a revolutionary jet engine and licensed the rights to Ferris.
Recently, during the event called the Millenium, Thomas learned that he was destined to
become one of humanitys New Guardians and was imbued with mysterious latent power.
Rather than accept this responsibility, Thomas has instead chosen to remain a family man. |
