Animated GIFs = bad or good? - Friday, 31 July 1998

Here's some comments before we start!

Animated GIFs, they do more than just a bit to make your web pages look interesting. But are they REALLY worth it? Here I will try to explain some basic steps in using these GIFs.

I need more Animated GIFs!

animoon.gif (14010 bytes)Yeah... animated gifs rock, only when they are small in size and they do not take AGES to load up. Again this is a waste of bandwidth and if site traffic is heavy, you may be VERY disadvantaged! Your pages might not even load up at all! And we all know that sucks!!!!
Not everyone has a 56.6 kbps MODEM, try to keep that in mind!
Besides, what do you base your page on? Animated Gifs? Guess not, people visit your site because of your content. People do not look at nice pretty animated gifs for hours on the net! So these gifs may distract their attention from your content to your gifs...
Gifs are all right if they are used for the following only : -
Used for creating link to other places, or if small enough can be used as a bullet list image, such as this example:
Here we go.
But then, the WC3 encourages us to use style sheets (HTML 4 - Visit the HTML section to learn more about these!) to create these links as it takes considerably less time to render text than images.
When your page is particularly sparse and wish to decorate it up a bit.
What you should NEVER use animated GIFs for:
To fill up empty space on your web page, sometimes, some emptiness is encouraged, one doesn't particularly like cramped web pages.
As highlighted above, To serve the "under construction" syndrome.
