MIDI = Bad or Good? - Friday, 31 July 1998

Hints and tips by Mitzrah Keoni! A lot of pages today incorporate the use of MIDI files. They add a new dimension to web page design and the interactions between the page and the visitor opens new dimensions. Are MIDIs on YOUR page doing you good?
  1. General tip with MIDI.
Try keeping them small. If not, don't have them at all. They take a lot of time to download especially on slower modem connections. Have MERCY, please!!
  2. About Looping MIDIs.
Generally, visitors do not like hearing MIDI being played over and over and over and over. That is why my MIDI scrolls with a new song every now and then. If you want to adopt a good manners web policy, I highly recommend adding this to your EMBED tag, controls="smallconsole" height="70" what this does is to allow a small less intrusive control panel for your visitors to disable the looping MIDI if they choose NOT to hear it.
  3. Choose a GOOD MIDI.
Most home systems nowadays have expensive sound cards but there is a fraction out there who still utilises 16 bit or even 8 but sound cards... you don't want to know how BAD midi sounds over those..... so if one sounds great, it couldn't sound that bad if on a low bit sound card.
  4. Recommend a site.
Some users do not have good sound cards, a good place to recommend them to go and get a good tool that increases their sound card output is http://www.crescendo.com I would think it is worth the visit.
