Profile: Early in Rahan's career, Rahan Akero came across a girl named Kyla. Their history forever a mystery, one thing seemed clear that they didn't start out as friends, but by the time she came to UGoI, they were something far greater. Being one of those rare but powerful forms of True Love that never sees cease or death, Kyla rose quickly in the ranks of the small family, and showed herself to not only be one of the most unconventional powerhouses, but one of the most wise and of common sense, and certainly one of the most respectful. Everyone around the UGoI has an agreement that Kyla may be the greatest woman of all time.
Kyla had with her a coven, two girls whom came around with her from time to time. Her sister (Meg) and her good friend Krista were a coven; a gathering of witches to work spells in tandem (think the three 'weird sisters' in Shakespeare's play Macbeth.) Throughout the early 2000s, they remained a strong addition to the UGoI ranks, assisting in whatever feuds they could as they went. Kyla ended up marrying Rahan, and by 2003, Kyla had given birth to the lovely daughter Celes...and thereby ended up disappearing due to raising a kid through childbirth, along with many of the other UGoI that disappeared in these times, although she remained in contact with Walker, especially during times of need with the loss of Abby.
In 2003, Walker returned from his searching for the Kanes once more to find that his then-girlfriend Abby Kiiro had lost complete interest in him. Having become less and less active himself, Rahan knew his brother would be grieved, and set out to find the lost Kanes himself. During this time, a mysterious anger overcame him. Here, he was under a dark impression that his wife had left him, and indeed he'd gone in a mindless wandering, popping in only sparsely to see what was alive and what wasn't, always edging more into darkness. Kyla found Rahan again after these misadventures, and assured him indeed they were quite together, and this caused Rahan to disappear once more, this time searching for the source of these alien memories and deep, horrible murderous intentions being fed into him.
By 2008, Rahan resurfaced once more during a time when Walker had finally given up hope for the UGoI to return--quite literally, as he came out of the ground from a portal that lead to a Hell dimension. Having found a new set of friends in the few he'd run across, Rahan met them and his wife all over again. During explanations of where he'd been, their reunion was cut off by Walker's long-time standing enemy Rhine, and this caused the UGoI to form once more into a team and take her and her twisted depredations, destroying her and her ilk once and for all. This tremendous reunion not only sparked the return of many more old school who heard the good news, but projected the rebirth of the UGoI.
Personality: Spoiled and stubborn. Sneaky, likes manipulating people for her own amusement or profit. Kyla always has a biting sarcasm or a realistic, straightforward attitude about her that she employs in almost every situation that she observes in the Sheffield Arms Inn. Obviously a person who thinks of herself more than others at times. She isn't however, an evil person with malicious intent, merely someone out to make a profit, in one way or another, off of everything. Her success in these dealings obviously shows that she may be smarter than some people may give her credit for. Definitely not a martial artist like Rahan, Abby and company, Kyla effectively compensates with her business intelligence and perception skills.
Kyla merits an even longer write-up than Abby herself, because of all the characters in the Usual Gang of Idiots, Kyla is by far the most radically changed from her original conception. And not necessarily for the better. To begin with, Kyla is a serious nerd. The sort of person who would berate herself for only scoring 740 on her verbal SAT, Kyla is very committed to intellectual excellence and has a strong affinity for those (like Edgar) with similar priorities. Of course, this focus caused Kyla to disregard her social skills, such that she became an easy target for "beautiful" types like Hannah. This in turn caused her to withdraw even further, such that Kyla was deeply shy at the start of her introduction (with her awkward manner of speech being a prime contributor to the groups unique take on the English language).
Kyla did become much better socialized by the time she fully joined the UGoI, but that background is still very much part of her. This background also made Kyla a defender of the underdog, with a very strong sense of right and wrong. This helps explain why she and Rahan became best friends. It also explains Kyla's commitment to the Usual Gang. Kyla is very passionate about the causes and people she believes in, and has even been known to be auxiliary leader of the Gang in Walker's absence (while she lacks Walker's natural charisma, Kyla can be surprisingly forceful when motivated). It could be that Kyla's virtues -- her ambition for excellence, her need to do the right thing -- were actually the motives for her magic abuse. Once she discovered her potential as a witch, Kyla started pursuing the craft in order to help Rahan and Edgar, and because she was fascinated by her unique abilities.
And she did accomplish a great deal of good. However, during her five year disappearance, Kyla's quest for perfection in magic became an end in itself, and during this time her psychological limitations shift priority (thus "Loyal to Friends" becomes Moderate commitment and "Curious About Magic" becomes "Obsessed With Magic" at Strong commitment). Once the most moral of the UGoI, Kyla became increasingly prone to rationalize her actions. Her self-confidence increased, but only with regard to magic use, and Kyla got defensive whenever Edgar or Abby warned her to be careful. Worse, because she met Rahan over a shared interest in magic, Kyla acted as though magic was the only thing keeping them together, even when Rahan was the one often disappearing for long stretches at a time.
This hubris led Kyla to a shattering downfall even before the midpoint of 2006, and for the rest of that year (and especially in its aftermath) Kyla's "Obsessed With Magic" psych limit in turn becomes "Fear of Leaving Home" (common, strong). In 2008, Walker tries to rehabilitate Kyla, knowing that she will eventually be called upon to use her powers for Good. However, Kyla is still shellshocked and afraid of losing Rahan again. Frankly, Kyla Akero is a mess. Kyla feels she was abandoned by her world and that with the end of the ESF War she no longer has a purpose in life. She hooked up with Walker as a way of getting out of the monotony of day to day life, and now realizes she's in too deep with the Akero Investigations to make any attempt to return to the old and her previous life as an outside girl looking in.
Currently, Kyla works as Walker's fixer, using her scattering of contacts from her old-secret agent days to try and set up jobs for the Akero Investigations. She does her best to acquire equipment and supplies as needed, and has been instrumental in allowing the team to acquire a base of operations. Kyla Akero also operates in the field, although she is not one of the team's front line combatants. Off-duty, Kyla is quiet and reserved, and usually can be found in a bar drinking a great deal and trying to forget about all of her past mistakes (both real and imagined). As she tends to get overly moody when drunk, Walker has had to bail Kyla out of bar fights more than once (fights which Kyla seems to enjoy starting). Though she has settled into the routine of life on Earth with its attendant duties and chores Kyla has never forgotten her destiny to reign as Empress of her world.
She does not handle it well if things don't go her way and will view everyone around her as beneath her station. She is prone to rudeness and temper tantrums when pushed too hard or told "no" too often. She can exhibit a sadistic streak and will not shrink from something so extreme as physical torture if she feels it would further her ends. In contrast she is quite deferential to males in general and will be doubly so to her husband in particular. No doubt due to her training in the court of her world. While getting near Kyla will be like crawling through barbed wire, arrival will reveal a considerably gentler soul. Kyla is rather greedy, and at one point extorts something like 20 million yen out of Rahan. Naturally, she is highly confident of her fighting abilities. Kyla can be very haughty and aloof, particularly when others call her a whore, but she had a heart of gold, and soft-spot for who life steps on.
Walker's Comments (Spoilers, misc. details)
Strengths: Kyla and her sisters have all the powers of a coven of witches -- they can float, teleport, do various conjurings and many, many other magicks. They can apperently "link" to produce extremely powerful magical effects, they could be the most powerful thing next to Rahan and Hannah. It is not known if they are one mind divided among three bodies, a linking of three individual minds, or something else altogether.
Weaknesses: Kyla has the typical vampire weakness to silver, and suffer when they come in contact with it. |
