Tours of Jewish Portugal
Situated on the northern bank of the Tagus estuary, Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, has always been a meeting place for different peoples. Important Jewish communities settled in this area and contributed to the flourishing of its trade and culture.
Open Hehal, Synagogue Lisbon
It was here that Portugal became an independent kingdom in the 12C. Jewish merchants and craftsman contributed to the development of this region, which is famous for its popular traditions and the hospitality of its manor houses.
A region of sharp contrasts, occupying the coastal strip between Lisbon and Porto and with a rich heritage of centuries-old monuments that testify to the coming together of peoples and culture.
Tomar Synagogue
Some centuries ago, in this rugged mountainous area of Northeastern Portugal was the region where many Jewish communities chose to settle and continue their ancestral traditions and forms of worship.
Belmonte Synagogue
In the southern plains of Portugal, the landscape is dotted here and there with white houses. The region is full of mediaeval towns, within which are to be found many interesting remains of Jewish communities.
Synagogue in Castelo de Vide
The Portuguese Maritime Discoveries in the 15C attracted many Jewish merchants to the Algarve. Today, visitors from all over the world are drawn to the Algarve by the reputation of its sandy beaches and golden cliffs.
