Fencing, Swords, Swordfighting...

Also see the old Utica College Fencing Club Links (Since I created it, and since they took it off the new site and haven't replaced it, I have moved it to my site - hey, alums have some privileges, eh? :) ). UC Fencing is still online though!

Check out the newly formed American Fencing League formed for the furtherance and practice of and to provide an arena for competition and sharing of knowledge about classical fencing - this attempts to be both more accurate to the original practice and training of fencing, and to the honor that its idealists consider it to be surrounded with.

A newly started classical fencing group is the Klassisches Fechten Soest (Soest Classical Fencing [group] ). This is a group in Germany (Deutchland), but they have translated their German webpages into English - you'll find this at the bottom of their pages.

Scrimia Scuola D'Armi is an Italian fencing group. They have a great listing of books and films related to fencing and swordfighting, as well as some interesting videos you can watch using Windows Media Player.

If you're looking for fencing videos, British Pathe has some great ones. I admit, I only downloaded the samples they have. Maybe in the future when I have more $$ I'll purchase the full length films. Some of the particularly good ones: Fencing on Ice (yes, really; there are 2 and the kendo one was particularly amusing), London Ladies Fencing, Kent Medieval Society, Maestro Graeco.

"Arms & the Babe" is a great intro to an interesting group called Babes With Blades based in Chicago. They are women of the theater with experience in stage combat, putting it to excellent and often humorous use.

Slithy Tove is a personal website but some interesting links if you follow through the site.

Sword Forum International is a great source and a great community for learning and discussing swords of all cultures and traditions.

Looking for information on swordfighting that attempts to look real? Check out this brief blurb on the Dawn Duellists Society of Edinburgh, Scotland, or take a look at The Brotherhood of Gregory which contains links to sites for many such groups.

The Academy of Arms: Online Quarterly is "Dedicated to the True Art, Science and Spirit of the Sword" and publishes articles online written by and about many well-known members of the fencing and sword-fighting community, both past and present.

Robert R. MacPherson, Armorer has an online exhibition of his work. He is "producing high-quality harnesses and individual pieces of armor, emphasizing replicas and historically accurate extrapolations from original works."

The Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA) can give you some general information on itself (basically an organisation for research and reenactment of Renaissance activities and arts). The SCA kingdom in which I reside is AEthelmarc

Chivalry Bookshelf/Revival Historical Military Clothing
The Kings Champions - jousting unscripted! and fine equitation
The Knights of Valour - Home of World Champion Jouster Shane Adams, offering training in equitation, swordsmanship, jousting, etc
Schola Saint George - Mission: To study, practice and refine the arts of swordsmanship and horsemanship
Sword Forum International Swords of different cultures and time periods

Horse Related Resources

The Spanish Riding School, with its famous Lipizzaner stallions, is also online, with a lot of information about the school itself, the discipline of dressage and their performances around the world as well as in Austria.

Don't miss Gerard Naprous and The Devil's Horsemen Stunt Team, professionals in the field, both men and horses.

Riata Ranch trains and does shows internationally of trick riding and roping. Check out this pic of the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls.

The Bridle Path has a wide variety of links and resources related to the world of horses.

The Lord of the Rings films have come and gone -- wonderfully done although, of course for anyone who knows the books the differences could be disappointing in some ways. Just came across a website that actually has some info about the horse (yes, the horse) that 'played' Brego. Caught my breath when he was carrying 'Aragorn' through the woods - he's got a beautiful stride!

Making Music

WUMB Boston Folk Radio - listen online to this wonderfully mixed variety of folk music!

The Folkus Project of Syracuse, NY: "'Folk', because it's what we love, 'Us', because that's who we are" [or something to that effect. please forgive me if I've misquoted :) ]

The Roches - ahhhhh sweet harmony, in a way I haven't heard before. These three sisters = incredible folk music.

CMRadio has great music - you can choose a station by the type of music you enjoy. This was how I learned about a bunch of great Christian Celtic groups like Runrig (Celtic folk rock from Scotland), Ceili Rain (Celtic folk rock from Central NY state!! I've even seen these guys play live, woo hoo! :) ), Ballydowse (Celtic rock punk from Chicago and Jesus People USA - greeeeat lyrics), Karnataka, the Russ Rosen Band, and The Electrics (Celtic rock from Scotland).

Listen to Family Life Network radio on the web, like I do basically every day. It's addictive. Great, contemporary Christian music, and wonderful speakers. KLOVE is my back-up in the case that I run into technical difficulties.

The Syracuse University Oratorio Society has 3 performances each year with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, including Handel's Messiah each Christmas season, a large work in the fall (e.g. Prokoffiev's Alexander Nevsky in 2005), and a smaller work/performance in the spring (e.g. Mozart's Missa solemnis in C in 2006). I've been grateful to be a part of this fantastic group for the past 2 years! They help me improve!!!! :)

gonstermachers are hard to describe but not a group to miss! Jazzy, Bluesy, with an edge...

Howl-O - folk singing pair who perform at Renn Faires, etc.

The Contemporary A Cappella Society (CASA) "is a non-profit organization formed in 1990 to foster and promote a cappella music of all styles." Their page includes information on specific a capella groups and events, avenues to purchase the music, and information about the activities of the organization itself, including The Urban Harmony Movement which is intended to foster "Harmony Through Harmony".

Five O'Clock Shadow is a vocal pop band out of Boston -- they're completely a capella, with a sound you won't believe! Their description of that sound: "an amalgam of rock, funk, dance, hip hop, jazz, and edgy pop grooves, in-the-pocket vocal percussion, and lush harmonies." They're great on cd and even better in concert!

Linguistics Links

Interested in Old English (OE)? Then take a look at the website of the Archaic English Project (aep). Its goal "is to resurrect favorite archaic English words, spellings and structures from Old English up to the present," and it also has links to many sites on the English language in its various stages.

Anniina Jokinen has an interesting and rather comprehensive site that deals with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (ca. 1375-1400) as well as an Anthology of Middle English Literature (1350-1485).
