OSLO - A Norwegian airline has run into an unexpected safety problem:
Seat belts on its aircraft are vanishing because they have become a hot
fashion accessory.
Braathens spokesman Stig Martin Solberg said mainly young Norwegians
steal the seat belts then use them to hold up their extremely baggy
pants. The airline, which is Norway's major domestic carrier, has been
losing an average of five seat belts a day.
"It is easy to spot people on the street with them," he
said. Solberg did not know whether this is an international trend.
Fashion stores offer similar belts, but the real thing seems to have
more status, Solberg said. He said several suspects been caught and
reported to the police.
Solberg said the seat belts only cost about $30 to replace, but the
real expense can be much higher - particularly if a passenger has to be
left because they have no seat belts or if a flight has to be delayed.
Solberg said the airline is considering suing seat belt thieves for
those costs, which could make seat belts one of the season's most
expensive fashion.
