Toyotas popular performance-engines NEW! Toyota is known as the producer of the reliable and powerful engines. I have tried to write this article for featuring the most popular Toyotas-performance four bangers. If there is mistakes, or you'd like to add some additions, plese feel free to contact me by my e-mail, and i'll fix it up.. Technical datas of 4A-GE-engines (new and old) are of finnish models, others are from Japanese domestic market models. 2T-G, 1600 cc, 8-valve Twincam. 110-115 JIS hp. Fabulous 2T-G,in the enginebay of the TE27 photo taken from Janken's website. I think that most commonly known Toyotas performance engine is the 2T-G. While someone think that it's antique, i think that it's not since that engine is still used in many performance applications -after 30 years of the day it was introduced. There is many different variations of 2T-G engines. 2T-G with dual side-draft carburetors has the highest compression ratio 9,8:1. 2T-GR is like the prementioned 2T-G, but with the lower CR 8,8:1. That R stands for Regular gasoline, and that is the reason for the lower CR. 2T-GEU is equipped with emission equipments (=U), and it's also upgraded with Nippondenso EFI (=E). 2T-GEU's CR is the lowest of all 2T-G#-engines, and it's good for moderate turbocharging. 2T-G is quite heavy engine, but in the other hand it can be overbored and stroked (with 3T/3T-GTE's crankshaft) to the 2000 cc. Also it is more endurable than newer and lighter 4A-GE, and suits especially for turbocharging. 2T or 3T engine is easy to swap with 2T-G since engine mounts are identical. 2T-G was originally the engine-option of Celica GT (TA22), Corolla Levin TE27, Carina GT (TA12) or Corolla Coupessa (TE71). As far as i know no fuel-injected 2T-GEU:s were ever imported officially to Europe. If somebody thinks that i am wrong, please correct me with e-mail.. Common Toyota 2T-G -models:
3T-GTE, 1800 cc, 8-valve turbocharged Twincam. 160 JIS p. 3T-GTE is basically strenghtened and turbocharged 3T. The cylinder head is equipped with 8 spark plugs (twinspark, 2 plugs/cylinder) The distributor cap is (for finns, at least. We have to order it from Japan because there's no aftermarket ones) expensive, and i don't have anything more bad to say about 3T-GTE- except about the turbocharger (Toyota CT20). It's is quite crappy, and it should be replaced with better one when raising the output of the engine. That engine has been option for 1982- Carinas and Celicas, for example. One ood thiog is that you can overbore the 3T-GTE to the 2000 cc, also with the better turbo you can get almost double the standard horsepower, because it is reliable and endurable engine. Allright, maybe it's pistons are not capable of withstand 320 hp, but the block and other internals are. Also the gearbox (and the bellhousing) is better and stronger over any other T-series engine. The tranny is W50, which is the same one as Toyota Supra mk2 or some 18R-G Celicas are equipped with. With the bellhousing of 3T-GTE you can use W50 with any T-series engine.
18R-G, 2000 cc, 8-valve Twincam. 130-145 JIS hp. TThat is just serviced 18R-G, photo is taken from the webpages of Twincharger. That two-litre twincam was originally installed in the engine-bay of RA-series Celicas and Carinas, as well as RT-series Coronas. That heavyweight engine is like a big brother to the 2T-G and it can be overbored to 2200 cc. The block and it's internals are quite similar with the singe-cam 18R (but not pistons and oil pump, for example). The 18R-G is popular and responds positively for turbocharging. A good example is Mika Eloranta's 600 hp old or new 900 hp 18R-G turbo-Celica. 18R-G turbo is popular in daily-driven cars (though Mika's older Celica was in street registered); One finn have daily driven 11,5s/400m 18R-G -turbo-Corona. 18R-G has many variations such as previously featured 2T-G had. The following table will explain some major differences:
4A-GE, 1600 cc, 16-valve Twincam. 124-131 DIN horsepower Webmaster's own ma "big port" 4A-GE from 1984. Almost standard, but equipped with free-flowing header, exhaust and headers. That is L-Jetronic model. Normally Finnish/European 4A-GE's are equipped with the D-Jetronic. This engine was an option for the MR2, RWD&FWD GT-Corollas and Carina GT, for example. Engine is more lighter than its predecessor 2T-G, and equipped with 16-valves. All models 1983-1987 had the big-port 4A-GE and the newer cars had the small port 4A-GE. The 4A-GE, with the stronger, newre block, is popular engine (in 180-220 hp form) in the finnish rallycars of the Group F. The older models cylinder head is better if hp-targer is over 220 hp, such in the 245hp@9500 naturally aspirated Formula Atlantic 4A-GE. More info of that you can find in the websites of the Club4ag..
4A-GZE, 1600 cc, 16-valve mechanically charged Twincam. 145-170 JIS hp. There is a mechanically charged and intercooled version of the 4A-GE, and it has 3 different variations. An older model has the lowest compression ratio. Bot of the newer models are equipped with the higher compression ratio, and the newest model has also the biggest crank pulley (biggest Psi). While the hp-ratings of 4A-GE are not enormous the torque (what moves the car) is very good and pushes you strongly forward from the idle to the redline.
4A-GE 20V , 1600 cc, 20-valve Twincam. 160-165 JIS hp. The Newest 165 JIS hp "blacktop" 20-valver 4A-GE. The newest version of a 4A-GE is the 20-valve model (3 in,2 ex/cylinder). That engine is available for Japanese Corollas. Among the additional inlet valves, there is other goo additions over the old 16V-4A-GE such as VVT (variable valve timing), independent throttle-body, shim-under valvebuckets, redline 8000/8300 rpm. There is two different models produced from the year 1995; silver to and blacktop, according the valve cover's color. That engine is difficult to install in the RWD car since it has distributor mounted in the end of the inlet-cam. Also the modifications are quite expensive; inlet cam is 750$. But i think that it is very good engine. Australian Ray Hall turbocharging has turbocharged one 20V-engine. It has also the block and internals (except the rods, for example) of 1800 cc 7A-FE. 7A-FE is the engine option of 1800 cc 1994-1999 Corolla, Avensis and Celica. 7A-FE is still in production for the engine of 4WD Corolla. Toyota Avensis; if you manage to find a wrecked Avensis, you can use it's block and it's internals for 7A-GE..
Blacktop 20-valve 4A-GE, turbocharged by TRD. |
