// Tool - Aenima |
Tool sounds part metal, part industrial. Certain parts of songs are flooded with distorted vocals, odd percussions sounds, and weird, drained out synth sounds. These parts appear in between, and sometimes seem to be in sprinkled overtop of aggressive, heavy guitars. The lead singer has a voice that can sound strong, piercing, creepy, or vulnerable... or all of those at once.
I didn't used to like Tool because of the singer's voice. But, the more I listen to different types of music, I developed a more open mind. The first time I listened to this album a couple years ago, I was dissappointed. Everyone that liked the bands I liked at the time loved Tool as well. Why didn't I? Because I wanted to hear music that sounded like it was being sung by an insane angry monster. That's not what Tool is about.
The music on this CD does sound angry, but not the sort of "in your face" angry that I had grown used to. This music is sadness filled with anger and confusion. The vocals go from passive, to aggressive, to passive again. Each song has a reason. The music and vocals sounds like they were sculpted to perfection, and it's apparent that whatever Tool is singing about, whether you understand it or not, needed to be said.
I give this album 7 / 10 stars. |
