I got this game after hearing much hype about how it seemed to combine all different genres of computer games into one amazing experience. It combines first person shooter action with RPG elements (such as character ability development) and sort of a puzzle / strategy feeling too, because there's always several different ways to get where you're going and to do what needs to be done. This is a great game, but at the same time, it didn't seem like anything ground breaking to me.
The first level of Deus Ex is damn cool! It gave me this great feeling that I was starting a game that was gonna pull me in and never let go. The game is so complex, and there's lots to do, especially in terms of making your character stronger. You can improve on certain strengths of your character and also add special abilities that use rechargable "nano energy". Some of these special abilities, or at least the ones I used are: seeing in the dark, super speed, toggling an ability that made my character a lot stronger in melee combat, and, best of all, a health recharging option that I kept upgrading until it was maxed out (which means I could basically run around getting shot at by three robots at a time and recharge my health at about the same rate I was losing it, cool stuff!).
The story line is top notch! It doesn't take long before you realize there is a long and involving story that will carry through 'til the end. The sound effects and music go very well with the game, especially the music that plays everytime you start the game, it makes you feel important. There are also a TON of items to stumble accross. There's an RPG-like inventory system, which limits how much you can carry at the same time, and some of the bigger weapons in the game take a LOT of room... so you gotta decide what you are really going to need.
Well, everything about this game sounds awesome, doesn't it? It sounded awesome to me, and it looked awesome... but for some reason, after I completed the first level, I seemed to have lost my enthusiasm. I don't know if there was just something about the first level that seemed so much better or if it was just the fact that I was new to the game, but as I slowly progressed from level to level, I found myself wishing the game would just end already. I had had enough with the story, and I was getting rather bored with the weapons and items. It was still enjoyable, but it started to feel like a chore. I can't stand to stop playing a game right in the middle though, so I played it through to the end. There were some cool parts, but nothing memorable. I think what this game is missing is big bosses. There are some pretty nasty enemies and boss like people in Deus Ex, but most of the difficult parts are made up of small spaces filled with some of the tougher baddies, nothing that got my heart racing like a Cyberdemon or Spider thing from Half-Life would. With all the conspiracy talk going on throughout the story, it seems like it wouldn't have been out of the ordinary to see some pretty badass monsters being unveiled... but that was not the case, what a shame! So, basically this game is the same all the way through, but you do get to explore different areas, and occasionally you'll find a new weapon to play with. But props (yes, I just said "props") should be given to the story line, it was one of the more complex ones I've seen in a game.
This game gets 8 / 10 stars.
