About Us
Born and raised in Metro Manila, Philippines, Arlene emigrated to the United States with her family at age fourteen. Soon after, she attended Jefferson High School in Daly City, where she eventually met and fell in love with Ulysses. Arlene then attended college at UC Berkeley, and recently graduated in 2001 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. Arlene is currently working at NVidia Corporation as a Hardware Systems Engineer.
Born in Pangasinan, Philippines, Ulysses emigrated to the United States with his family at age seven. He attended John F. Kennedy Elementary School, Pollicita Middle School, and Jefferson High School, where he eventually met and fell in love with Arlene. Ulysses attended college at UC Davis, and graduated in 2000 with a degree in Agricultural and Managerial Economics. He is currently working at ClearChannel Communications as a Junior Accountant.
Though they were oblivious of each other throughout most of high school, they found each other towards the end of Ulysses' senior year (Arlene's junior year). They first started talking to each other during the CSF club camping trip, where Ulysses was drawn to Arlene as she made funny faces at him, and she first noticed his delicious filipino barbeque (with banana sauce!). They then started chatting extensively online on the now-defunct SF Bay Guardian BBS (remember "Sailor Moon" and "The Pretender"?). Ulysses asked Arlene out to their first date at Fisherman's Wharf...and the rest is history! Somehow, Arlene and Ulysses managed to survive a long-distance relationship while attending different universities, and numerous other challenges. Now they are both working professionals, and hope to find a place of their own soon.
On July 5, 2002, we were on vacation at the scenic and relatively deserted Gualala, CA. We stayed at a wonderful bed and breakfast inn, and took plenty of long walks by the ocean, which was only a few steps away. While we were on a cliff staring at the waves, Uly suddently held my hand, and then went down on one knee! He held this gorgeous ring in front of me, and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him! Needless to say...I was very moved, even teary-eyed, but managed to say yes and give him a kiss. --Arlene =)
