History
of MUBSS
In 1992,
a small group of about 6 Malaysian first-year students studying
at the University of Melbourne started what is now still known as
the Melbourne University Buddhist Studies Society (MUBSS or BSS).
Even though there was a student Buddhist society a few years earlier,
this society is to prove the most enduring despite a few troubled
years.
The aims of the society are provided in its constitution
which remains largely unchanged since its inauguration. Not coincidently,
the activities provided by the society try to fulfil the aims delineated
by the constitution. Basically, the society provides university
students with a look or glimpse of the entire Buddhist world without
any preference for any school of teaching. The society hopes not
just to provide the intellectual food for interested or curious
students but also provide support and welfare services to students
in need, especially those who prefer the Buddhist way.
Currently the society is undergoing a "renaissance" with
an aim to lay the foundations for the future success of the society
in a university environment where there is the constant problem
of a high turnover of students. We are also very encouraged and
inspired by the energetic cooperation, help and participation of
students from other tertiary institutions around Victoria, in particularly,
students from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Monash
University, Caulfield Campus.
