The Experience of Survival

Summary: A survivor of the promised day searches for the answer to his question: Why?
Genre: General/Drama
Rated: PG-13
Oneshot Completed
Published and Completed: 22-04-04

Seito's Review:

It's really different to "Stoptime" which was just really touching, and "What No One Knows" what was bittersweet (I'm still not entirely sure that I'm using that word correctly, but I'll stick with it for now).
At the voice - the POV of the person that it's in, feels static. I don't mean it in a bad way; I think it's quite suitable for the character that Apapazukamori is writing about. You know those pictures where we have a person standing in the middle and then all around them everything's blurry, as if life's passing them by really quickly? That's the feeling I get from the character. But as well as the characterization, I like the... the emotion I feel in the writing. It was more devastating in Stoptime and mellow in What No One Knows + Sunday Fishing, but here it's just subtle. In all honesty, the first time I read it, I didn't feel much (I got that feeling of being "still"), not compared to her other one-shots, which is why this wasn't grabbed the day it came out. I read it again two days before the writing of this review and all of a sudden I just felt these subtle hints of feeling in the text.
...^^;; Perhaps I'm reading too much into things. Honestly, though, it was really this fic that set into stone what I believe is a really great talent by a wonderful author. Some people, when they write something, it feels as if the emotion they put into everything could be shifted onto another character and work the same way (generic types). Happiness is happiness, sadness is sadness, end of story, no in-between. But with Apapazukamori, it's not that. It's as if she takes the feeling of, say, angst, and controls the level used. "Kamui is upset so this could be how he feels. Subaru is also upset but he's not going to feel sadness in the same way that Kamui does." I suppose I could compare it to being able to use different shades of grey in a painting, not just using either black or white. Either way, I think "The Experience of Survival" does wonders in showing contrasts between characters, as well as great characterization and story.

What No One Knows

Summary: Three of the Seals play a game that involves a lot of liquor and some secrets.
Genre: General
Rated: PG
Oneshot Completed
Published and Completed: 02-10-03

Read the "What No One Knows" DVD-style Commentary. [written 22-04-04]

Seito's Review:

This is another favorite of mine and the opening was just so... amusing. No, this isn't one of those humor fics. The story itself is so sweet without overdoing it and I really love Apapazukamori's portrayals of the characters here. It's sweet and humorous, but it's also got that feeling of sadness to it; just a good balance between the three. I thought that "What No One Knows" blended those three really smoothly; it didn't feel awkward or anything.

Stoptime

Summary: Every evening at eleven o?clock, he sets the alarm.
Genre: Angst/Supernatural
Rated: G
Oneshot Completed
Published and Completed: 08-05-03

Seito's Review:

This was the very first fanfiction by Apapazukamori that I read. It's a short, poignant piece that takes place after the Final Day, and it was absolutely tragic to read that I think I almost cried. I can't really say much on this, only that I've reread it heaps since then, and the effect still has not diminished. As it is, so far, it's one of few fics (another being "Pieces" by Leareth) that has really moved me.
... One would think that I'd have a whole essay on this, considering the fact that this is my favorite out of Apapazukamori's fics, and in general. ^^;;

Shimmer

Summary: Somewhere in his mind, there is a pond.
Genre: General

Sunday Fishing

Summary: Sorata spends a quiet afternoon with a pack of cards and a certain priestess he is enamoured of.
Genre: Romance
Rated: G
Oneshot Completed
Published and Completed: 10-10-02

Read the "Sunday Fishing" DVD-style Commentary. [written 06-03-04]

Seito's Review:

I've said this once and I'll say it again. I really love Apapazukamori's portrayals of the characters. Her Sorata and Arashi just make me want to squeal (^^;;). I love Sorata's thoughts here (*snigger* Teaching Arashi to have a sense of humor indeed ^^). And the ending. The ending was just perfect. The author mentioned in her DVD-style commentary for Sunday Fishing that people had mentioned to her how they thought the ending was too unsuitable and abrupt, but I thought it was just suitable for Arashi and Sorata. It's a really sweet piece.

Small Hours

Summary: While the whole wide world is fast asleep, you lie awake and think about the girl and never ever think of counting sheep...
Genre: General
Rated: PG
Oneshot Completed
Published and Completed: 18-07-02

Seito's Review:

Have I mentioned how much I love Apapazukamori's ability to mold emotions to the personalities of the characters? I have? Damn. *cough*
This is another fic that I was rather "eh" about, but on second reading, fell in love with. Perhaps it was the matter-of-fact way Sorata stated a few things. It was different to his genki self (... at least, what I'm more used to); one of those little introspective moments that he might go into when nobody was around. Sorata is a person, I think, who would put on a front for the people around him, look after them (like an older brother ^^) but be more quiet and introspective in those moments when nobody's around. Whether or not Sorata is actually like that, "Small Hours" still manages to be serious, yet at the same time, have the "Sorata" feel to it. Very fitting and pretty damn cool. XD

X Therapy

By Leareth and Taryn

Summary:
Case 1: Leareth. Multitasking schizophrenic fan-author.
Case 2: Taryn. Crazy fic-writing web-mistress, creator of the Pie joke. Put these two together, add in the screwed up cast of X, and send them all to see a shrink.
Warning: read this fic at your own risk. Writers cannot be held liable for damages or personal injury resulting from laughter. We would like to apologise in advance to anyone who may take offence at this fic. Then laugh in your face, of course.
Genre: Parody
Rated: PG-13
4 Chapters Ongoing

Seito's Review:

This is definitely one of my favorite humor fics out of every single fandom. "X Therapy" is absolutely hilarious. Leareth has managed to "skewer" the characters without having done so - the characters are in-character, and yet, obviously, they wouldn't act like this in real life. *hope I'm making sense* This is definitely a must read. Leareth has done something what many people on sugar highs have been unable to do: written something hilarious.

White Hands

Summary: How am I special to you, let me count the ways...
Genre: Drama/Action/Adventure
Rated: PG-13

Seito's Review:

The best thing I love about "White Hands" is definitely the way Seishirou is written. In fact, in her DVD-style Commentary for "White Hands", Leareth pointed out some very interesting things that she did regarding narration that I personally would never have noticed if it hadn't been pointed out to me. ^^;;

In My Line of Work II

Summary: Unsolved mysteries may be older - and more dangerous - then you think.
Genre: Drama/Crime
Rated: PG-13
Sequel Completed

Seito's Review:

I really like "In My Line of Work 1 + 2" for several reasons, one of them being that we see the characters of X through another person's eyes - somebody not involved with the Promised Day. Another thing also, Koboyashi, Leareth's original character and the guy who's narrating the story has got to be one of the most realistic OCs ever. Shigure and Ayako, the other two, are just as fun. Not to mention the fact that he has some great descriptions, specifically when's describing Subaru, Kamui or Seishirou. "In My Line of Work 2" is even more fun to read than the first, specifically because we get to see how Koboyashi, Shigure and Ayako even more to the myth that is the Sakurazukamori. Definitely something that you shouldn't miss out on.

Pieces

Summary: Some things you just can't let go of... or maybe they won't leave you alone.
Genre: Drama/Angst
Rated: PG-13

Seito's Review:

This is one of those fics that is just incredibly heartbreaking to read (another one that made me feel this way would be "Stoptime" by Apapazukamori). The writing style here I thought suited Subaru perfectly. Set after Rainbow Bridge, the author basically captures and makes the reader feel the hopelessness, the emptiness, the despair that Subaru probably went through after what happened. This fanfiction is basically - to quote - "Fragmented pieces that make up a story that don't really need anything to join them up as long as they're in sequence." Leareth mentioned in her ficblog once that she wondered why people had such strong reactions about "Pieces" (horrified/freaked out they were). Well, I suppose "Pieces" is just that. The thing is, I personally don't find "Pieces" to be that disturbing; I just think it's an absolutely beautiful thing to read. The style she writes in really captures that "weightless feel of total despair". As well, though the idea may not be as complex to write as "Eternal Colors" (as the author believes), I still think that in some ways, it would be just as difficult to write something like this as it would for "Eternal Colors". I was incredibly moved by it, especially for the part titled "Blood."

Eternal Colours

Summary: If you are human, you must be able to feel. Whether you accept those feelings is another issue entirely. There is no such thing as a person who cannot 'feel'. But, if you've never 'felt' before, how would you recognise a 'feeling' when you have one - and how would you deal with it?

Forty years after the Final Day, a young couple move into a new home with dreams of a new life. Those dreams turn to something dark and frightening when the husband discovers a strange secret hidden away that has to be told.
Genre: Strange/Angst/Drama
Rated: PG-13
9 Chapters Complete

Nukume Dori

Summary: After the Final Day, Subaru finds himself sixteen again and reliving the year of the Bet, this time with the knowledge of all that is to come. He knows that Seishirou is the Sakurazukamori, he knows that they are playing a deadly game of love and death ? and he knows that Hokuto?s life is at stake if he loses.
This follows the Tokyo Babylon story quite closely for most part, but since this is the older, more tragic Subaru we?re talking about, although the ?cases? may start out the same, they will end quite differently. It all depends on Subaru?s choices ? but does he have the right to change the lives of all those people for what he believes is the better?
Genre: Drama/Angst
Rated: PG-13
8 Chapters Ongoing

Seito's Review:

Gyah! I absolutely love "What-ifs" and I love them even more when they're done properly. It's very interesting to see Subaru deal with the knowledge that his sister will be shish-kabobed at the end of the year of The Bet. Even more so, is seeing how he actually tries to deal with everything, the decisions he makes - and how different he is from the innocent and naive boy he's supposed to be. I mean, obviously, the change is apparent when he's 25 and blowing Dragons of Earth to smithereens. To me here, though, the change just seems so blatant, probably because him being in his 16-year-old body now it's automatic for me to compare how different his 25-year-old mind is to his 16-year old one. ... I'm getting really confused looking at this. ^^;; Either way; Nukume Dori=tres fun. Go read it.
