SFUO Elections 2008

Did the final interviews today with candidates being elected for SFUO positions. Interviewed 5 candidates in total with a 6th not being able to make it out. I tried to keep it neutral I'm trying not to endorse anybody just trying to give you guys the feelings I got about the candidates during the interviews.

VP SOCIAL
Danika Brisson
The reason I interviewed Danika was because of the bike related initiatives she had on her platform. I would have liked to speak with the other candidates running for VP Social but this was all the time I had for. She seemed fairly informed on certain issues and not so much on others. She did push for more space and training for clubs. She does have experience working with OPIRG who we have a very good relationship with and I like their clubs system working as an OPIRG working groups was better than that of the SFUO things were more flexible. Danika didn't have a strong platform built around budget and promotions for the clubs. But she was aware of different ideas floating around on how to increase promotion for clubs. She also wanted to see more networking with clubs. Bike related she wanted to work together with us to improve security on campus and hold winter workshops and more repair workshops on campus. Overall she seemed like a strong candidate but because I didn't get to interview the other candidates I have nothing to compare her too.

VP FINANCE
Dean Haldenby
Dean actually came to me and gave me the idea to interview different candidates. He was a fresh candidate and determined to change things so those of you who aren't happy with the status quo would probably be happy with him. However, what happens after he is elected is unknown as it is with all the other candidate's situation could become great or everything could go strait to hell. He had a whole bunch of ideas, I wasn't sure how realistic some of them were but he really seemed energized. The biggest thing he brought across was a free bus pass for all students at the university. He too was president of a club and knows first hand about the frustrations that go along with working with the SFUO and the University. He said he wanted to cut down on bureaucracy and increase money for clubs which all sounds good but is it attainable, he thought so. He like most candidates was easy to talk with and seemed to show concern for the problems I was bringing to him. He seemed to have a solution for every problem I presented to him. But again I don't know if he knows how attainable they are I know the university puts restrictions and gets in the way of everything so it is pretty hard to tell what can be done until the candidates actually go out and try to accomplish it.

Mohamad Karout
Mohammad had worked somewhere in the SFUO so he is more aware of what is and what is not possible. He didn't mention anything revolutionary. So I don't see any surprising changes from him. However, he seemed pretty trustworthy and had a few beautification related ideas including planting more flowers on campus to make the university more presentable to others. He wanted to enact a loan system for the clubs so bigger clubs can hold larger events and take out more money. He also wants to get some new av equipment for the club which is great because the fees to get them from the university are crazy. He also wants to get more room for the clubs. This again seemed like low budget feasible ideas. Which was good because you have a better handle on what will happen if he is elected.

PRESIDENT
Pam Hrick
The meeting with Pam went fairly quickly. Pam worked in the Clubs room this year and I had to deal with her a few times. Since she is closely associated with the SFUO she has a better idea of what ideas she can present on her platform that can fail or pass. Nothing really revolutionary but I don't see why her ideas wont be feasible. She wanted to increase office space for clubs on campus which seemed to be a recurring theme for many of the candidates this year because of the move out to Desmarais. She wants to make it easier for new clubs to receive subsidies and buy more tech equipment for clubs so they don't have to pay the ridiculous rental fees. She wants to work with green campus more making the university more green setting up more recycling boxes and reducing energy consumption where we can. She wants a universal stamp for posters on campus and setup more online forms for clubs to fill out instead of the current paper mess. For promotions she said she was OK with an idea to setup a TV that would scroll through upcoming club events on campus. So overall the interview went well and she seemed well prepared to handle the task.

Jean Philippe Michel
I would have liked to talked to JP Michel from what I read he seemed like a good guy but he didn't show up to the meeting so I have nothing to say.

Mathew Winstone
Mathew is president of the computer departments student federation. He seemed to be pretty determined on achieving everything on his platform. Again for those who aren't happy with the status quo and want to see radical change, could be good could be bad change, then you might like him. He wants to decentralize the SFUO so it's more accessible to students throughout the campus and its branches. He wants to increase space for the clubs all over the university and increases publicizing using the kiosk (the small public computers all around the campus). He knows this plan will take a while to enact but he's determined to stay until it is in place. He wants to make things more electronic keep paper consumption down and revert to electronic forms and only use paper at last resort. Overall he sounds determined to change things.

One of the central aspects that all the candidates seemed to want to cover was the lack of space for clubs at the University. With the new building opening up next year and a shuffle of a lot of office spaces around the university it looks like the clubs will be getting a lot more space next year. Each candidate had great points in their platforms and it's a shame that most of them are in their final year of University and it's either all or nothing for them. It would be great to see the candidates try to work with the future SFUO administration to implement some of their program ventures. But it doesn't work that way and a lot of good ideas are going to be taken with the candidates that leave next year. I don't think I heavily favored anybody I tried to keep it pretty neutral every candidate has their strong points and weaknesses it's up to you guys to vote for who represents you. Thanks.

Bike Club Meeting with Election Candidates

We were suppose to have a meeting today with SFUO Presidential Candidate JP Michel but he canceled last minute, it would have been nice if he had come or sent somebody down to tell us he couldn't make it instead of making us wait. So while we were in the area we went and talked to one of the other SFUO Presidential Candidate Pam Hrick who said for next year she would try to get more office space for clubs maybe even making the 3rd floor of the uni centre for clubs only. We'll try to schedule an official meeting with her and the other Presidential Candidate Matthew Winstone next week. Tomorrow we're meeting with Candidate for VP Finance Mohamad Karout at 2:40pm in the clubs room. And we're setting up a meeting with Danika Brisson for either tomorrow(Friday) at 5:40pm in the clubs room or some time after 10am on Monday. Keep you posted.

Weekend Events

Saturday, September 30, 2006: Kanata Lakes
We will meet this Saturday and bike out to Kanata Lakes. Once we get there we will do some of the trails. It should be a pretty long ride so bring plenty of food and water. On our ride last week we ran out of water so bring more than you think you'll need. We will meet in front of Protection Services near the SITE building at 10:00am. The ride shouldn't take more than 5 hours. If it rains the ride will be canceled. Any other questions email the club.

Sunday, October 1, 2006: Road Cycling in Gatineau Park
On Sunday we will meet in front of Protection Services near the SITE building at 11:00am for a road ride through Gatineau Park in Quebec to Pink Lake. Depending on the amount of people that show up we will be able to split up into multiple groups if need be. The road ride shouldn't take more than 3 hours. If want to do trails when we get out there that can be arranged and we can extend the ride for another hour for all the mountain bikers in the group. This ride was specifically planned for all the cyclists in the group (which is most of you) so cyclists don't worry your tiers wont be touching any dirt. If it rains the ride will be canceled. Any other questions just email the club.

Sunday, October 1, 2006: Pedal for Poverty
Bike Canada will be holding an information session this Sunday at 7pm at 275 St Patrick Street (between Cumberland and Dalhousie in the market). Their main goal is to raise money for an international development agency and are planning a bike ride across Canada during the summer of 2008 to do so. This is part of the make Poverty History Movement most of you have probably already heard about. So if you're interested RSVP Erica at enick072@uottawa.ca or by phone at (613)860-0240. Also bring food to share with everybody else.

Critical Mass Today

Hey Guys, So we're still setting up stuff for the club and will be having a big meeting with all the club's organizers this Tuesday. If there is anything you want us to consider or if you want to help construct certain sections of the club don't hesitate to email us back. We just had our working group approved by OPIRG last week so they'll be helping us out too with different aspects of the club. We are going to try to setup a more active University of Ottawa Mountain Bike Team. Here is the Mountain Bike Racing Council website: http://mtnbike.sa.utoronto.ca/oumrc/oumrc_home.htm. If we can setup the team in time and get the appropriate funding there is a race in London, Ontario on the 15th of October (Sunday). We went out to Gatineau Park last weekend and nobody died which is great. Downhilling at Camp Fortune this weekend has been canceled. Sorry to anybody who was looking forward to getting out there with us. We'll have a ride out there rescheduled as soon as possible. This weekend's biking schedule is looking kind of hazy. Some last minute things came up so I can't tell you guy's what exactly is going on. There is a possibility of downhilling at Calabogie on Sunday or we could be going out to Kanata Lakes or maybe even both. So I'll send you guys a quick email about the the ride situation this weekend tonight. Upcoming Events: Friday, September 29, 2006: Critical Mass Critical Mass isn't organized by the bike club but they meet every last Friday of the month in Confederation Park (which at Elgin and Laurier) and go riding together in the downtown streets at 6:00pm. Anybody can come out regardless of skill level. I'll be doing it tomorrow for the first time so if you're not familiar with the location meet up for the standard daily ride at 5:10 (I might be a bit late because I have a class that ends at 5:30 another member of the club might be waiting there so hold tight) then we'll go down to Confederation Park together. The website for Ottawa Critical Mass is: http://ottawacriticalmass.blogspot.com/. Saturday, September 30, 2006 To Be Announced Sunday, October 1, 2006 To Be Announced Daily Rides Daily rides are still going on at 5:10 outside protection services Mon-Fri. So if you're up for riding any time during the week come on out. Thanksgiving Weekend No rides so far have been planned for Thanksgiving Weekend. If you want a ride to go down email the club and we might be able to pull something together. Sunday, October 15, 2006: Boler Mountain Possibility of mountain bike racing in London, Ontario. We'll keep you guys posted.
