ICSC'S ROLE AS A BROKER

Since 1993 ICSC has worked as a knowledgeable broker
  • Helping cities identify their needs and priorities
  • Assisting them in the development of specific projects and proposals
  • Identifying qualified providers of expertise and technologies for the project from Canada if they are not available from the city
  • Introducing sources of funding (aid agencies, international financial institutions, charitable donors), where it is necessary to add to the cash resources of the city and assisting the city to secure funding
  • Finding Canadian private, public and civil sectors partners and defining their roles and participation
  • Building trust and personal relationships
  • Systematically spotting and prompting the next steps forward
  • Receiving and disbursing funds under written contracts with each party
  • Covering costs through a modest management or handling fee levied as funds pass through the brokers hands.

General Model

ICSC works with cities to identify their challenges in urban sustainability, and then builds teams from the public, private and civil sectors to address those challenges. Each situation is unique and each team is tailored to the particular needs of the local government. ICSC teams have tackled issues such as: urban transportation, waste management and treatment, inner city rehabilitation, green building design, land use planning, urban greening, disaster mitigation and reconstruction. In the field of governance, ICSC focuses on sustainable development planning, the greening of operations, public particpation, multi-stakeholder processes and strategic planning.
