I love this city! It was not what I expected, but much better. I stayed 3.5 days and could have easily visited for 2 more. The people were the most friendly I have met in all of Europe. Almost everyone speaks perfect English and is willing to help, if necessary. A couple times during my visit, people came up to me to offer advice or to share a bit of history. In addition to Munich's friendly nature, this city was extremely clean, so clean you could eat off the streets (but don't).

Munich was founded in 1158 and is the capital of Bavaria (Bayern). The Wittelsbach dynasty began in 1240, and ruled the kingdom of Bavaria until the end of World War I. The Wittelsbach influence is evident in the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical architecture adorning the streets of the city. As patrons of the arts they provided the basis for Munich's world-class museums and art galleries.

Today, Munich is a modern city with an obvious Bavarian culture and definite German style. As Germany's most popular and wealthiest city, MŸnchener have obvious pride and enjoy their heritage. This is evident in the fact that much of Munich was destroyed during World War ll, but many historic monuments, churches and palaces have been meticulously restored to their former glory. Many other building were rebuilt in the Bavarian style formally know to the city.

Munich is a compact city of 1,304,000 people. Since many of the sights and museums are located in the city center, it's easy to travel by foot. Where an occasional sight falls outside of reach, the convenient S-Bahn and U-Bahn will easily take you there. The best time of year to visit Munich is from May to September, when the beer houses, cafŽs and bars are their most lively. During the snowy winter, Munich offers traditional holiday decorations and romantic Christmas markets.

From the lively beer halls to the stately museums, Munich is a cosmopolitan city that combines proud provincialism with European style.
