Composition of bone: Bone is mineralized connective tissue and its composition varies. Mainly composed of:

  1. Inorganic mineral salts.
  2. Organic matter and their ratio is 1:2.

Organic matter includes: membranes, cells, cartilages, vessels, nerves, fluids and marrow.

 

Salts present in bone

Calcium Phosphate                                                 :           86.0 %

Calcium Carbonate                                                  :           05.8 %

Magnesium Phosphate                                           :           03.0 %

Sodium Carbonate and Sodium Fluoride etc.     :           05.2 %

Functions of bones

·        Formation of skeleton.

·        Lever for muscles.

·        Protection of viscera (skull).

·        Blood cell formation (bone marrow).

·        Reservoir of mineral salts.
