Descriptive Anatomical Terms Anterior/cranial : Front. Posterior/caudal : Back. Medial : Close to median plane. Lateral : Away from median plane. Superior : Above. Inferior : Below. Superficial : Close to surface. Deep : Beneath surface. Distal : Away from body. Proximal : Close to body. Cranial : Towards tail. Rostral : Towards nose. Volar : The posterior face of the distal part of the gore limb. Palmer : Surface of fore limb that contacts the ground in standing. Planter : The contact surface of the hind limb in standing. Oral : The structure towards the head. Aboral : The structure away from the head. Central : The part nearest to the midline. Peripheral : The part nearest to the surface. Parietal : The body wall or the wall of the cavity. Visceral : The viscera or organ in the cavity. Somatic : The part of the body other than viscera. Axial : Towards the central line of body or any body part. Abaxial : Away from the central line of body or any body part.
