Portrait of a Poet

                                       Steadfast he stands upon the shores of time,

                                       A lighthouse, brightening a frowning sea;

                                       Undaunted by the waves of doubt or crime,

                                       He beckons to storm-tossed humanity

                                       And guides them safely past each fearful shoal,

                                       For in the calmer waters they will be

                                       Reaching higher, higher for a goal.

                                       Immortal, for how can it ever die,

                                       This edifice that sings with zephyr lilt,

                                       Whose every stone, a song against the sky,

                                       Was deftly shaped, with care and cadence built.

                                       How useless is a blueprint or a scroll

                                       Depicting honors, aims or even guilt,

                                       When poems open shutters to the soul.
