The English-language version by the George Baker Selection spent 9 months in the Austrian hitparade during 1975, and it was often at #1.

Each of the 3 German versions has a different set of lyrics.   The version by Nina & Mike is the most well-known German version.

When this song was new in the mid 1970's, you either loved it, or you loved to hate it.  This was especially true if you were a typical American teenager.  Teenagers are not supposed to like the same music that their parents like.   This song is now an evergreen in Europe and is played on radio stations meant for the adult listener.
