What began as a 19th Century American folk song penned
by Stephen Foster in the 1800's became a German sailor song in the 1950's
and then a party song in 1980 when recorded with new lyrics
and a few additions to the melody by Euro-Disco
group "Boney M".

Notes:
- Sheb Wooley is also known as that loveable drunk character Ben Colder.
- Mickey Katz was known for doing parodies of popular songs with a Yiddish accent after leaving Spike Jones's band.
Kishka is a Polish sausage.
- In the German version, our friend from "the other star", also called Mars, doesn't eat purple people or get a job in a rock-n-roll band. Instead he sells chocolate ice cream and tries to get dates with all the girls on the block!
