Our Legislative Branch became a model to be copied by new nations who sprung in the world after 1776. The Philippines, and Japan for example have similar legislatures structure. Basically two houses: House of Representatives, and the Senate together are the Legislatures (congress) of the USA. The house of representatives membership is based on population: one representative for 470,000 citizens determines the number of representatives from each state, district of Columbia, ... The number of senators is fixed as 2 senators for each of the 50 states. All legislation starts in the house and only when it gains house approval, it goes to the senate. All approvals are based on simple majority, except if it is vetoed by the president, then a 2/3 majority vote of both houses is required to override a veto, More can be found in the following referrences: |
