>>Do tell!!! You got to meet him??? Excellent!!! Ooo... We want to know EVERYTHING!<< Everything, eh? OK, here goes... It was Friday, August 20, 1999. I was looking forward to my first Al concert in 5 years (my very first Al concert was at the Ohio State Fair, on August 14, 1994). I was going with my cousin, aunt, and uncle (who I've successfully managed to turn in to rabid Al fans! Mwuhuhahaha!!!). They'd never been to an Al concert before, and I told them they were in for a real treat! Anyway, my aunt and cousin drove by my house to pick me up. On our way back to their house, we decided to stop by the venue Al was playing at (which has since been closed down.) We saw the ever-present bus in the parking lot, shimmering with it's magnificent beauty. We waited nearby to see if, on the off chance, Al would walk by. We were there about 15 minutes, and no sign. So, we left, and continued on our way back to their house. My cousin and I were getting hungry (it was around "lunch time" anyway), and since we were in the downtown area, we figured we'd just stop and eat somewhere there. Anyway, as we drove through the "main drag" downtown, I was looking out the window, and I saw who I thought was Al, walking down the street! Naturally, I did a double-take! I thought "No way that's him!" He turned around for a brief second, and as I got another look, sure enough it was him! I yelled "LOOK! THERE HE IS!" My aunt and cousin looked over in complete shock! My aunt then rolls the window down, honks the horn, and yells, "HI, WEIRD AL!" He looked over, smiled, and waved. It was unbelievable. If not for the traffic, we would've pulled over and said "hi", but there really wasn't any place to stop, so, we just kept on going. Since we were close to a shopping mall, we decided just to stop and eat there. We go inside, when my cousin happens to look up and spot Al on sn escalator. So, we ventured up to the third floor, when we bump in to him AGAIN! HE walks over, and says to my aunt, "Hey, weren't you the lady from the van?" She replied "yes" then went on introducing us. I was literally speechless. Anyway, after some talking, my aunt mentioned that we were going to the show later that night. AL then said, "How many are coming?" My aunt told him it would be the three of us, plus my uncle. AL then said "OK, I'll try and get you some backstage passes." I almost went in to a coma, then my aunt said "oh, you don't have to do that!" Al replied "oh, no, it's my treat." After much back and forth, my aunt eventually agreed to it (had I not been so nervous, I would've chimed in "Let the man speak!") My cousin was nervous too, though he eventually spoke up and said, "I can't wait for the show tonight!" to which Al responded by jumping and saying "ME TOO! I'M SO EXCITED!" That was basically the end of the conversation. We ate at one of the restaurants there (when Al walks by again...), then went back to their house. My aunt called my uncle at work, my cousin called one of his friends, and I called my parents, to tell them all the good news. They, too, were in awe. The rest of the time, we mostly watched one of my Al tapes, until about 5:00 PM. Also, during that time, we each worked on some gifts to give to Al. My aunt made a gift basket (that's what she does for a living, and this would end up being the first of many Al baskets...), I made an Al comic (I actually started it around the beginning of August, and worked on it periodically throughout the month. It was actually a "re-make" of an Al comic I made when I was 12 [when I first became an Al-Oholic]. I was going to keep it originally, but after all this, I decided just to give it to Al without making a copy for myself), and my cousin wrote what was basically a fan letter. We ordered a pizza around 5:45, then proceeded to the venue, where we ate in the car. Shortly after we finished, two guys in a car drove up and asked if we were here for the Al show. My uncle said "Yeah... we're not parked in the wrong lot, are we?" One of them said "No, but, the concert's been cancelled." A resounding "WHAT!?" came out of us. They just said "Yeah. Sorry." Well, that's just great! The concert was still on at 1:00, when we (approximately) talked to Al. We had all these gifts, too. What'll we do now? Here's where it gets interesting... My aunt goes inside and explained the whole thing about our meeting Al earlier in the day, and having gifts. Whoever she talked to gave her the name of the hotel he was staying at. Of course, we kept that information confidential. We went to the hotel, and she explained to the clerk that we had gifts for Al. The clerk got him on the phone, and he said he remembered us, and he'd be right down. While we were waiting for Al, we saw Jim and Rubén in the lobby. They were just passing through, so we really didn't get to talk to them. Shortly after, Al walks down, says "Hi!" and gives my aunt a hug. He then said "Sorry the show got cancelled. My manager called me this afternoon, and tells me 'Um... they're not going to pay you.' But, we're actively trying to schedule a make-up performance before the end of the tour." We told him we'd be there, and gave him our gifts (which he really liked). Then, we got some pictures taken, as well as a few autographs. So, there you have it. How I met Al. I know that was a looooooooooooooooooooong story, but it was worth it, right? P.S.: One of my other cousins (not the one mentioned in here), wrote to "Ask AL" about why the show was cancelled, and his question was answered! Take a look: (from Sept. '99) William Kirk of Columbus, OH asks: Why did you cancel your concert in Columbus, OH at the last minute? "The venue at which we were scheduled to play had failed to provide even the minimum technical requirements needed for us to put on a show, and we weren't fully aware of this until we actually rolled into town. Also, they decided they weren't going to pay us to perform - which is always a drag. Hopefully another Columbus show (with a different promoter) will be scheduled soon, and we're all extremely sorry for the inconvenience." As it turned out, they came back in Feb. 2000, at a MUCH better venue (and frankly, that's where I was hoping they'd play to begin with). And yes, I went with my "posse", and this time, we all brought big, red, plastic scissors... |
