Tim Dwight: It feels pretty good. We've had an outstanding beginning to the season. Everybody's gunning for us, though, so there's really no time to celebrate. DI: How do you feel you're doing individually so far this season? TD: I'm doing ok. Going into the season, I don't say, "Ok, this year I want 60 catches and 1,000 yards." I ask myself, "Am I running good routes? Am I getting downfield to block and spring [Chargers running back] LaDainian [Tomlinson]?" I feel like I'm contributing, definitely. I worry about doing the small things. I try to be a team player. DI: Realistically, how far do you think you guys can go this year if you make the playoffs? TD: I don't know. Even though we're young, this team has confidence. Look at the Patriots last year — you never know. DI: How 'bout them Hawks? TD: The Michigan game was awesome to watch. We haven't won there since 1990. I think we're definitely for real. Just like we are on the Chargers, they really seem to be focused. They just worry about the next play. Defensively, they're playing sound, and on offense, they're not turning the ball over. It's definitely an exciting time to be a Hawk. We just need Ohio State to lose. I'm hoping Michigan beats their ass. DI: How did you react when you saw the essentially Playboy-like spread of you shaving your nether-regions in a bathtub in ESPN Magazine last year? TD: I didn't have any problem with it. When we did it, I kinda knew they'd use that shot because they only took two shots. It's part of my personality. It's something I do once a week. If anyone has a problem with it, I don't really care. It's good to show different sides of athletes — that we don't always have to be all tough all the time. DI: Finally, the upcoming Super Bowl is in San Diego — how cool would it be to play in it on your home field? TD: It'd be amazing. It'd be unbelievable how many people we'd have jumping on our bandwagon and it'd be great to have the support of our fans. But at the same time, that's a ways down the road. DI: Any words for your Hawkeye faithful you want to depart with? TD: Just tell them I wish them the best. And also … see you in Pasadena. News for August 2Here is a story about Tim Dwight that shows why he is greatly admired. The story is courtesy of the Iowa City-Press Citizen, and reads as follows:Often today, good deeds go unnoticed. But a good deed in Colorado did get noticed by Rocky Mountain News columnist Sam Adams, who wrote about it a few weeks ago. It seems an unidentified motorist pulled over and helped two young women in distress on the side of the road in Denver. After failing to jump their battery with cables, he offered his rental car and stayed with the vehicle so the pair could get to an appointment. When the women — Cydney Springer and Lindsey Ditsworth — came back about 90 minutes later, the stranger had gone to a shop and gotten the car a new battery. All he asked in return is that the Colorado residents root for No. 85 of the Chargers the next time San Diego was in town to play the Denver Broncos. As you might have guessed, No. 85 for the Chargers is former City High and University of Iowa receiver Tim Dwight. According to Adams’ column, Dwight often visits Denver to spend time with former University of Colorado football player Darren Fisk. The two were in camp together back with the Atlanta Falcons. "It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing – their hood was up and one of them looked stressed," Dwight told the Rocky Mountain News. "I was on vacation, I wasn’t in a hurry, so I thought I’d help." News for July 21The Chargers begin training camp on Monday, July 22. Tim Dwight is entering camp listed as a starter on the 2-deeps, with Curtis Conway as the other receiver. It's possible Dwight might not be returning kicks this season, in hopes he can remain healthy for an entire season for the first time in his 4-year NFL career. The Bolts play their first pre-season game on August 10, against the Arizona Cardinals. As a fix until the season begins, here is an article from the San Diego Union Tribune about Tim Dwight and his newly found surfing talents. News for April 22The following comes from The North County Times:San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer isn't certain WR/KR Tim Dwight will be the top man for returning punts this year. After signing a five-year, $15 million deal the team would like to keep him healthy and he's coming off a season where he missed 6 games a year ago. Schottenheimer said he'd have a better idea of who will return punts at the end of minicamp. News for April 17The Iowa City-Press Citizen has written several articles about Tim Dwight this week. They are linked below:Fast and Fearless Former Coach Saw Dwight's Potential For Tim Dwight, It's Payback Time Dwight touches others with his generosity News for March 31Chargers.com posted an article about Tim Dwight and some teammates serving meals to the homeless on Easter Sunday. After signing a $15 million deal with the NFL's San Diego Chargers, the 1994 City High graduate donated $40,000 to the school's track program, City coach John Raffensperger said. News for February 26Below is a link to the San Diego Chargers' official website's recap of Tim Dwight's press conference to announce his new deal with the club. Here are some excerpts, including quotes from both new coach Marty Schottenheimer and Dwight himself: "Tim Dwight, in my opinion, represents everything that I as a football coach look for," Schottenheimer said. "A high standard of performance. A commitment to getting better every day. And maybe even more important than anything is a consistency in that performance that we know will enable us to successfully pursue our goal, which is a championship." "The best part that I’m looking forward to is just getting the opportunity to play football," said Dwight. "Last year coming in as the third receiver was great for me. But I had that chance to start during my second year in the league. I enjoyed that. The more opportunities you get as a player, the better you become. I think my best football is ahead of me. I would like to get that chance, and they told me I would get that chance. I’m very excited about that." To read the entire article, click here. The San Diego North County Times also printed a story about the press conference and Dwight's signing, and it can be read right here. News for February 24The following comes from ESPN.com:Tim Dwight always wanted to be considered a play-maker, not just an exciting third receiver who could return kicks, ESPN.com's John Clayton reported. The Chargers rewarded Dwight for those skills Feb. 23 by giving him a staggering five-year, $15 million contract that included a whopping $5 million signing bonus. Dwight only played 31 percent of the Chargers offensive downs last season, but he was an impact player, one of the reasons that general manager John Butler was insistent that he be included in the trade that gave the Falcons quarterback Michael Vick. Dwight, who caught 25 passes for 406 yards, had two reverses for 24 yards and a touchdown. He also averaged 11.3 yards per punt return and scored a touchdown. You can read more about the signing by clicking here. News for February 15Here are a few tidbits I found on the 'net about Tim Dwight:ESPN's John Clayton reports the Kansas City Chiefs still plan to spend a high draft choice on a wide receiver and would like to sign a smaller, quick receiver via free agency. Two possible candidates are WRs Tim Dwight (San Diego) and Az-Zahir Hakim (St. Louis). and... The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the San Diego Chargers have opened contract negotiations with WR/KR Tim Dwight about a new deal. Dwight's agent, Jack Bechta, said the team has made it very obvious they want Dwight to return. He sent them a proposal two weeks ago but has not heard back since. He does anticipate them contacting him in the coming days. Bechta said Dwight would like to compete for a starting job and the Chargers intimated that he'd get the opportunity if he re-signs with them. News for February 7According to Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton, a sports radio jock at Xtra 690 AM in San Diego, the St. Louis Rams are showing a great deal of interest in acquiring the services of Tim Dwight. "Hacksaw" claims the Rams don't want to bring back the fumble prone Az-Zahir Hakim, and are prepared to make a big money pitch to get Dwight. Dwight, who becomes an unrestricted free agent on March 1, would presumably take over Hakim's punt return and receiving duties. According to Hamilton, it would be a "big loss (for the Chargers) if he jumps ship."Kansas City and Miami are two other teams that have shown interest in signing Dwight. I'll keep you updated if I hear anything further. However, at this point, it's purely speculation. News for January 28The following comes from chargers.com:Before the second half of his season was cut short by a collapsed lung, Tim Dwight provided the Chargers with one of the quickest and most productive third receivers in all of football. Dwight, who saw action mainly in third down situations, finished the year with 25 catches for 406 yards, third on the team. His average of 16.2 yards per reception led the Chargers in 2001. Dwight had the Chargers’ longest reception in 2001, a 78-yarder at Dallas in Game 2. He also scored a touchdown on a 16-yard reverse against the Cowboys. In addition to his role as a wide receiver, Dwight gave the Chargers one of the league’s most explosive punt returners. The first time he touched the ball as a Charger was on opening day against the Redskins, when he returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown. He finished the season with 24 returns for 271 yards and one score, averaging 11.3 yards per punt return. Acquired in last year’s pre-draft trade with Atlanta, Dwight is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this off-season. Getting him re-signed before he becomes a free agent is at the top of the Chargers’ ‘To Do’ list in 2002.
