The
environment of Ste Anne de Portneuf is ideal for the observation
of sea and shore birds. The ornithological clubs know that already. Several
of their members can always be found on the sand bar in front of the village.
The island of Laval is home to the biggest nesting colony in the region.
It is a half hour trip by boat from the marina. As the island is situated
in a bay sheltered from wind and swell it is a pleasant visit. May is the
best time to observe the birds which are still migrating. The sea
is covered with thousands of ducks and on Laval island nesting has already
started. In June and July, the chicks have broken out of their eggs and
get bigger before our eyes. This is the time when the parents are the busiest.
One of them feeds the ever open beaks and the other tries to keep away
the black-backed gulls which will snatch any young bird that strays away
from the protection of its parents.
