The biggest of all the marine mammals , the blue whale or more familiarly "the blue" regularly frequents the estuary of the St Lawrence River. Each year it returns to pass 5 or 6 months in our waters to feed. Ste Anne de Portneuf is in the centre of its feeding area.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Even though it  may weights more than 100,000 kg, the blue whale feeds on small crustaceans weighing  one or two grams.  It needs more than 4000 kg per day.  According to the researchers and other whale watchers, this is one of the few places in the world where one is able to see the blue whale in sheltered waters so close to the shore and it stays sometimes to the end of December.  Depending on the year, we see from 40 to 100 blue whales in the St-Lawrence estuary. You may also see fin whales, minky whales, humback whales, porpoises ...
