Working With Horses

There are a number of career opportunities available within the program offered by Windy Hollow. There is a tremendous amount of work within the up-keep of horses in general, let alone when they are used to rehabilitate disabled individuals. Click here for more information.

Training Courses

SANEF Modules

During school holidays and by appointment we offer three applications of intense preparedness training courses to candidate instructors wanting to take their national equestrian exams with SANEF:

Option A

Short course over a 10 day intense block. A short course, one day a week over 12 weeks.
Cost: R3000

Or
Option B

Modules 1 and 2 in one block and other modules as stand alone training courses in separate training blocks.
Cost: R3000 for modules one and two and other modules as stand alone.

Or
Option C

3 month practical training block covering modules 1 to 3, this can be done in 2 versions (25 lectures) or the full (45 lectures). Lectures are booked every second day, this is to allow for homework, research and self-study to be completed in between, not to mention the fact that practical experience in running our private yard is also catered for. Modules 4 and 5 are addressed in the same manner over 3 months each.
Costs: R250 per lecture over a three month block.

Mock exams are charged at R300 per module. Please note that prices are subject to change without prior notice.

The following subjects will be covered in the available modules

Basic training notes are given in electronic format and the taking of additional notes from lectures is encouraged. Practical and theory hours are logged and signed off in candidate log book.

B&B facilities available on site at R50 per day, extras can be arranged and are charged for independently accordingly.

Lectures are all privately one on one or in pairs and are 4 - 6 hours long, all tailored to suit both candidate and lecturer. We have a high previous pass rate and references are available on request.

A maximum of 2 candidates are catered for at one time, the reason for this is to maintain exclusivity and personal directed attention and focus - we eat, sleep and live teaching horse care while our candidates are with us. With our personal approach, our past candidates have kept contact with us for years after studying with us if they need advice or want to teach us something. Personal riding lessons can be arranged on one of our horses with Dressage Judge Justin O'Reilly.

For a tailor made package, please contact Helen on 082 975 5369 and give your preferences.

The costs to do the SANEF exams are payable directly to SANEF, and are not included in our fees.

Equine Anatomy Studies

An anatomy series covering the effects of different injuries is also offered, this is a stand on its own subject and makes use of specimens that we have collected and DVD's etc that explain in greater detail the mechanics of the horse's movement and what his structure will allow him to do. (Currently we have 8 full skeletons to teach the effects of a wide variety of injuries and 35 heads to teach teeth structure and aging - will be starting to post photos and information relating to the content of these lectures soon).

Highlights that you will experience whilst studying with us...

  • Comprehensive display of the equine heads demonstrating age and teeth structure in different ages and breeds of the horse.

  • Currently 8 skeletons used to teach the effects of injuries, seen here the wither of a healthy horse and a horse that reared and fell over backwards.

Rehabilitative And Therapeutic Riding Strategy Training

The Therapeutic Riding Course spans over a total of 6 modules, covering about 200 lectures, if the prospective candidate works quickly they can complete one module in six to eight months

Each module covers about 20 or so lectures, this is offered in 1 week intensive study blocks and then 12 add on assignments to complete the module.

Written exams at the end of each module plus the marks for assignments each add up to 50% of total mark at the end.

With time we would like to work on the details needed to make the course a diploma etc type qualification.
