Paul Evans has a psychic gift: he can touch an object and see its history in his mind. He has tried to turn this gift into a career, but lately there hasn't been much call for psychics so he is thrilled when wealthy young philanthropist and antiquities collector Alyssa Lakehurst hires him to determine the history of a mysterious map drawn by a gold miner in the early 1900s. What Paul sees when he touches the map, however, are not directions to the Mother Lode, but rather the location of something so earth-shaking that it will change the course of human history.
