The
beaches of North Goa extend from Fort Aguada in an almost
unintereeupted 30km sandy stretch to the border with Maharashtra.
Sinquerim, the beach below the fort, and Candolim are popular with
package tourists - there's not much here for those on a very tight
budget.
Guarding
the mouth of the Mandovi river, Fort Aguada, was built by the
Portuguese in 1612. It's worth visiting the moated ruins on
the hilltop for the views, which are particularly good from the old
lighthouse. Nearby, the new lighthouse can be visited from 4
to 5.30pm; photography from it is forbidden.
Thunderwave,
on the beach outside the Taj Holiday Village, offers a range of
pricey water sports, including parasailing (Rs. 1300) and jet skiing
(Rs. 750) at the southern end of Sinquerim Beach, so this is not a
great spot for swimming. It's much quieter further up along
Candolim Beach.
There
are various boat cruises on offer. Thunderwave has a dolphin
cruise for Rs. 350. John's Boat Trips, further up behind
Candolim Beach, has half day dolphin trips with lunch and beers on
the boat for Rs. 550 and a variety of other trips such as the
full-day 'Crocodile Dundee' river trip including lunch with a Goan
family and free drinks for Rs. 950. |
