"The McClung House at Clover Creek southwest of McDowell was built in 1844 by William McClung and his wife Rachel . . . It has remained in the family and is now owned by Mrs. Montgomery McClung Linkous, Mrs. Mary McClung Leake, and Mrs. Frances McClung Buchanan. Three years after the house was built Highland County was established, and the McClung house was one of two voting places for Stonewall District. The Clover Creek Post Office was for years in the front hallway at McClung house. The walls, eighteen inches thick, are of brick shaped and kilned on the plantation. . .The foundation is formed from hand-chiseled limestone blocks and foot-thick logs. Flooring is inch-thick pine tongue-and-groove boards. Heavy paneled doors have the original hardward. The front section, 2 stories plus attic, is the traditional 2 over 2 design with outside end chimneys. A wing at the rear has the kitchen with a huge open fireplace.
A stockade once stood in the meadow directly in front of the house. Here the settlers could flee when Indian attack was likely. The fort was in existence at the time of Gen. Braddock's defeat in 1755. On that date 2 boys were born in the stockade. Variously called Clover Creek Fort, Nelson Fort, Fort Meadow, and Fort George, its outline can still be traced. Beyond the fort meadow was an old grist mill on the Bullpasture River." (From Old Virginia Houses-Shenandoah, by E.F. Farrar and contributed by Marianne Frazier)

Thomas McClung donates a photo of his great grandfather's photo. It was taken in Tipton, Iowa in 1866. He went to Tipton to visit his cousins and uncles after he was discharged from service in the Civil War. He was very impressed with the fertile farm land there, being a farmer himself. He almost stayed in Iowa, however his future bride, Caroline Doyle, was still in Malden, a small town east of Charleston, WV. Caroline did not want to move to Iowa as it was too far from her family in WV. He returned to Malden and they were married. They resided at Charleston, WV. They had five children. The 1880 census of Kanawha, East Louden Dist. shows this family with four of the children born by that time. He died 9 Feb 1909 and is buried at Springhill Cemetery at Charleston, WV. Stories about Tom are related by Crosby McClung in They Hacked the Clearings (See McC J #6,12) Tom was a noted hunter. He built pens for wild cats and sold them alive. "Below Mt. Lookout in what is known as the James Woods is a long ridge that extends almost to Meadow River. This ridge is known as Hogskin Ridge and here is how it come to have that name. Uncle Tom McClung and his son, Caleb, were on this ridge hunting one day. At this time there were wild hogs in this area. The hogs were claimed by different parties, but it was only a claim as no proof of ownership could be given unless the hog was marked, which was rarely the case. Anyway, Uncle Tom had no claim on any of them. He while hunting this day, spied a fat, nice big shoat and the temptation was too great--he killed it, and proceeded to skin it. He had a sack with him. After he and his son had skinned and dressed the shoat, he happened to see Joseph Shaffer coming up the hill. He hurriedly began cramming the cut-up hog in the sack. Uncle Tom waited until Joseph was near, pretending not to see him and said to Caleb in a loud voice, 'Son, help me get this deer in the sack.' The boy probably failed to catch a sly wink from his father; anyway the boy replied, 'Deer? I thought you said it was a hog.' Joe had a hearty laught over it. Tom said, 'Now Joe, keep this away back'; but it finally leaked out and Hogskin Ridge it has been ever since."
Matthew T. died 12 May 1890. They had nine children

Geneva also mentions the White House built by Mathew McClung. She states:
"The White House" was a place of considerable note in the earlier days of the history of this part of Nicholas county, Mathew McClung and his wife Mary, owned quite a large tract of land in and around Gilgal and "Fowlers Knob" settlements. They owned "slaves" and lived somewhat as the Virginia people of that day, having a large log house which they weather-borded with plank and painted white, it being the only white house in all the country around, and perhaps in the county. It was known as the "White House."
Some time along about 1855, a mail route was established from Meadow Bluff to Summerville and a post office called Snow Hill, about twenty miles east of Summerville. I do not know if there were any other offices on the route, but there was probably one at Fowlers Knob. Mrs. Jennie White was appointed postmistress. I have often wondered why the name Snow Hill was selected. Near this place was a rather high hill, facing north, on which snow lay most all winter and spring; perhaps that gave the idea for the name.
At one time Uncle Gid was working for Mathew McClung, a wealthy farmer who had built and owned the "White House." This year Mr. McClung had raised a considerable crop of buckwheat and having a part of it ground into flour, took it to Kanawha Falls for sale. Having received a higher price than he expected, he decided to speculate a little, whereupon he asked Uncle Gid if he know of any one who had raised buckwheat that season. Uncle Gid replied: Arnold has a hundred bushel of the finest I have ever seen."
McClung ground and sold the remainder of his crop, then went to father; to buy his. Father told him he had not raised more that year than he wanted for his own use. When McClung returned he said: :Gid, I thought you said Arnold had raised a hundred bushel of buckwheat:, Uncle Gid replied: "He did, straw and all." |

G1331
The fifth child of John who md Rebecca Stuart. From the way they named their children, it would appear that John's mother was a Jane. We know that Rebecca Stuart could not have been the mother to all the children as their births cover too great a time span. John did not name any of his children Rebecca.
John was born abt 1733 and grew up in what became Rockbridge Co., VA. When he was 18 he came to Thompson Creek in Bath County. The first tract of land granted to John, Jr. was 165 acres on 3 Aug 1771. A survey of 952 acres was made for him on 16 Sep 1799 (Bath Co. Surveryor's Bk 1, p.282).
John served in the Revolutionary War in General Porterfield's regiment. Gen. Porterfield used to say that when John McClung would pray before a battle, victory was sure to perch upon the American banners. He was an elder in Windy Cove Church for over 70 years, and served on the first Bath County grand jury. He was for a number of years the proprietor of the hotel at Warm Springs. It is reported that he used to visit his brothers in Greenbrier Co. once every year and was greatly beloved by his kindred there.
He married Sarah McCutcheon of Augusta County (later became Rockbridge) abt 1770. Her parentage is not proven but appears to be Robert McCutcheon and Margaret Callison. (See McCutcheon Trace for family). Sarah was b. abt 1750 on Little Calf Pasture River in what became Rockbridge Co. They had nine children.
By 1830 Sarah and John are living with their son William (1830c Bath). John died abt Sep 1832 (Bath WB 4:129). He was buried on his land near "Big Spring" about one mile from Woodland church on Route 625. This land is now owned by the family of the late F.P. Hicklin. By 1840 Sarah was living with her daughter Mary (1840c Bath). Sarah died abt Jan 1846 (Bath WB 5:140). She was buried in the cemetery at Windy Cove Church, though there is no stone erected.
