VERY IMPORTANT:
Apparently the Japanese version of Legend of Mana had weapons and armors with higher attack and defense. Just in number, though. For example, an Ishe Platinum Spear in the Japanese version had an attack power of 56. In the U.S. version an Ishe Platinum Spear has an attack power of 45. However, they still deal the same amount of damage. For some reason though, the numbers used to determine attack and armor power were changed during the translation. Unfortunately, the LOM Ultimania guidebook provides numbers for determining the attack power of weapons and armor in the Japanese version so the numbers are meaningless to American gamers.

-Some items are meant to be tempered oon specific types of armor as you'll see.
-Weapon is abbreviated as W and Armor as A.
-Weapons with naturally low Sharp suchh as Glove, Flail, Staff, Hammer will not benefit very well from being tempered with items that increase Sharp such as Rhinolaupe or Creepy Eye. Instead they might benefit from being tempered with items like Citrus Squid since they have little or no Sharp to lose. (untested)
-You may be wondering about a few thinngs in this chart so the charts following this one are designed to explain some of this stuff.
-Also, I should mention that when it ggives % bonuses (example: W: Sharp -25%, Heavy +25%) those refer to the Sharp, Heavy, etc. of the material and not the type of weapon or armor

II. Weapon Attributes

Notes Before Starting:
-A weapon's attack power is made up off 4 different factors
1. Sharp. This is a combination of a weapon's ability to Slash and Pierce. Gloves and Flails have no sharpness.
2. Heavy. Not really sure what exactly this is. Perhaps a weapon's Strike damage...
3. Force. A weapon's ability to work well with the force of the user's arms.
4. Technique Power. A weapon's ability to work well with the user's finesse.
Your weapon's attack power is a total of these 4 factors. But usually you're not allowed to increase one without decreasing another so it's best to temper in items that increase what the weapon has a lot of and decrease what the weapon has little of. For example, when tempering a Hammer it'd be a good idea to add Cleric cards and Giant's Horns because those things decrease Sharp (of which the Hammer has very little anyway) and increase Heavy (of which the Hammer has a lot).

LOM Ultimania gives this formula to determine a weapon's attack power:
[ (A × a) + (B × b) + (C × c) + (D × d) ] ÷ 128 = Total Attack Power

So I'll do an Ishe Platinum Spear as an example:
[ (52 × 50) + (20 × 50) + (24 × 50) + (48 × 50) ] ÷ 128 = 56
And that gives me the attack power of an Ishe Spear in the Japanese version of LOM. Yay!

III. Armor Attributes

Notes Before Starting:
-Everybody should understand Strike, SSlash, Pierce, and Magic Defense because armor defenses are explained in the game.

LOM Ultimania gives this formula to determine an armor's individual attribute defense power:
(E × e) ÷ 64 = Total Strike Defense
(F × f) ÷ 64 = Total Slash Defense
(G × g) ÷ 64 = Total Pierce Defense
(H × h) ÷ 64 = Total Magic Defense

Just like the formula for determining weapon attack, this one only seems to work for the Japanese version. I really don't know what has been changed.

-These are the numbers that are effectted by bonus percentages when tempering with cards and items. For example: Temper a Dangerous Eye into an armor made of Menos Bronze and you get a 25% bonus to the Menos Bronze's "Strike" defense. Or temper a Wicked Eye into a weapon made of Menos Bronze and you get a 25% bonus to the Menos Bronze's "Sharp".
