THE DAY XYLARA FOUND ZORF

One crisp, fall day as I was out traipsing through the woods in search of pansies & primrose, to brew a special potion for my new friend Sprezella, I heard the most awful ruckus. I flew up in a crabapple tree to see what was going on.

Over in the strawberry patch there were sparks flying and smoke boiling. As I flew down to take a closer look, something came through the air right at me. I zigzagged around it and fell to the ground with a plop. As I brushed myself off and turned around I was looking at the biggest egg I have ever seen. Now I am only 5 inches tall and this egg was a least two feet long. It was oblong in shape and bluish gray in color. I felt of it and it was warm! As I began to walk around it I came face to face with the most horrible creature I had ever seen. Her nostrils were flaring and smoke was roiling everywhere. I quickly flew back to my crabapple tree for safety. As I peered through the smoke I saw a HUGE dragon. Nobody had told me there were DRAGONS in these woods!!

She was looking around as if she were terrified, and furious. “Oh my! Oh my!” She was saying, “What am I going to do. Those mean ole men…..ooohhhhhhh! What am I going to do! My poor baby.”

Well, throwing all caution to the wind I gingerly flew down to her and asked, “are you all right? What’s the matter?”

“Oh my, oh my,” she screeched, “WHAT are you? Where did you come from? Oh my, oh my! What am I going to do, oh my poor baby, what am I going to do? I repeat, WHAT,are you and WHERE did you come from? Oh me, Oh my!!!!” And with that she burst into tears.

Now if you have ever been in a deluge of dragon tears you know I almost drowned! I quickly flew up and landed on her shoulder, by now I had figured out she was probably harmless, and said, “Mrs. Dragon, if you would only calm down and tell me what was wrong, maybe I could help!”

“YOU!” She hollered. “YOU! You really think YOU could help! Why you are just a tiny little thing, whatever you are! Just go away and leave me alone to figure this out. Oh me, oh my, my poor baby, whatever am I to do,” she wailed.

“Mrs. Dragon please let me help. My name is Xylara and I am a fairy and fairies are magic, you know! We can put a spell on those mean ole men, whoever they are.” I said.

"Oh.....Oh, so you’re a fairy?", she said sarcastically. "I didn’t think they were real and looky here, I have one sitting right here on my shoulders. Lands sake, what do you know! Are you really magic? Do you think you could help me…oh me oh my…my poor baby...My poor baby...whatever am I to do. Do you really think……oh, no I know there is nothing YOU can do...you’re not real…now I’m imagining.......”

“Mrs. Dragon, pleeaassee be quiet long enough for me to say something!” I interrupted. “Yes, I think I can help! I have lots of friends in the woods. We can think of something. Now, why is your baby...uh...egg out here is the woods?”

“Well,” she began; “it all started last month when the last resident knight of old King Elmer’s died. Kingy decided he wanted new, young knights in the castle, to liven things up a bit, you know, so he got three new ones from Hinngemann Castle to come. Well, they just didn’t understand how it was with Kingy and me. WE have been together since he was born. Why, I served his grandfather! After all, I am 105 years old!" she said indignently. "I raised Kingy, he rode on my back and we played together. Kingy always said I had the run of the castle. Well, the mean ole Knights had different thoughts about that! I was supposed to stay in my lair outside the castle gates; it’s cold out there!! And only come inside when they decided it was time for jousting exercises or to practice avoiding fire breathing, or some such thing.
THIS IS MY CASTLE, I told them, but they said they were going to change that!"

“So,” she continued, “I went to Kingy and he said not to worry, just to stay out of their way. So things have been going pretty good until today when Cook told me she had baked me a dozen Elderberry Pies. Now, I just would DIE for an Elderberry pie!!! So I sneaked into the castle and started retrieving them. My downfall came when I stopped to munch on one…..I just couldn’t resist, they smelled sooooo good! But I got caught. They said those were THEIR pies and they would teach me a lesson and give me a reason to stay outside. They had found my baby in the dungeon where I had been staying and threw him out…Just like that!!! And slammed the gates on me and drew up the drawbridge!! Now that there bridge has not been raised in 50 years and they just slammed it shut. Now what am I supposed to do.” And with that the tears began flowing again, huge, gigantic water drops.

“Ummm...well, how about I baby...uh...dragon-sit for a while. At least until the guards calm down and you can talk to Kingy...uh...King Elmer and get this straightened out.” I said. “let me go get some help to get this egg back to my house.”

“Oh, would you really do that for me? By the way, my name is Azurlia and I am a dragon!
Oh, really,” I said sarcastically, “I never would have guessed! And yes I will help you. Just let me go get some help." And with that I lead her to a grove of trees and told her to stay put until I returned.

Now, how pray tell am I going to get that egg home? As I walk along, I run up on Robbie Robin and tell him of my predicament. "I can help," Robbie says. "Let me gather some friends and meet you back at the trees."

I went back to stay with Azurlia, and sure enough, it wasn't too long before Robbie and his friends arrived. And they had the biggest net I have ever seen. They had made one from twigs and limbs and it was perfect. That baby dragon was going on the ride of his life! We loaded him up and after a tearful goodbye, I gave Mrs. Dragon directions to my house. I promised I would look after him and she said that in return she would forever be my protector. She would tell Kingy what had happened and see that I had his protection, too,AND that something WOULD be done about those mean ole men........

So with that we took off to my house deep in the woods.
