January 11, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the National Academy of Sciences on guidance mission. He was accompanied by Choe Thae Bok, Kim Ki Nam and Kim Yong Sun, secretaries of the Party Central Committee.

January 12, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il saw a New Year performance given by the merited choir of the KPA. He was accompanied by director of the KPA General Political Department Jo Myong Rok, KPA marshal Ri Ul Sol, Chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol and KPA generals, as well as secretaries Choe Thae Bok, Kim Ki Nam, Kim Jung Rin and Kim Yong Sun and leading officials of the WPK Central Committee.

January 19, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-site guidance to the Thaechon General Hydro-Electric Power Plant. He was accompanied by chief secretary of the North Phyongan Provincial Committee of the WPK Kim Phyong Hae, secretary Kim Kuk Thae and first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee Pak Song Bong and Ri Yong Chol.

January 20, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the Choe Hyon Military Academy. He was accompanied by generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and colonel general Ri Myong Su of the Korean People's Army, as well as secretary Kim Kuk Thae and first vice department directors Ri Yong Chol and Pak Song Bong of the WPK central committee.

February 9, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected Korean People's Army (KPA) unit No. 615 entitled Kum Song lifeguard. Kim was accompanied by director of the KPA General Political Department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission Ri Yong Mu and staff members of the KPA supreme command.

February 10, 1999: Kim Jong Il, General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, toured the land rezoning in Kangwon Province. Kim was accompanied by KPA vice marshals Jo Myong Rok, Ri Yong Mu and Kim Yong Chun and secretary Kim Kuk Thae and first vice department director Ri Yong Chol of the party central committee.

February 10, 1999: Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, saw an art performance of the art propaganda squad of the KPA Air Force Command. Also in the audience were Jo Myong Rok, director of the KPA General Political Department, Kim Yong Chun, chief of the KPA general staff, Ri Yong Mu, vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, and general officers of the KPA, as well as Kim Kuk Thae, secretary of the WPK Central Committee, and Ri Yong Chol, first deputy department director of the WPK Central Committee.

February 16, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited a women's anti-aircraft machine gun battery under KPA unit No. 991 that had won the three-revolution flag twice. Kim was accompanied by generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and other general officers of the Korean People's Army.

February 16, 1999: Kim Jong Il saw a winter training of soldiers of KPA unit No. 682. Also present were generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and other general officers of the Korean People's Army.

March 2, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il met participants from a meeting of company commanders of the KPA. Kim was accompanied by KPA vice marshal Jo Myong Rok, first vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and director of the General Political Department of the KPA, KPA marshal Ri Ul Sol, KPA vice marshal Kim Yong Chun and chief of the general staff of the KPA, KPA vice marshal Kim Il Chol, Minister of the People's Armed Forces, KPA vice marshal Ri Yong Mu and vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and other KPA vice marshals and generals.

March 11, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the land rezoning in Kangwon Province. Kim was accompanied by vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission Ri Yong Mu, secretaries Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Ki Nam and first vice department directors Pak Song Bong and Ri Yong Chol of the Worker's Party of Korea Central Committee and general officers of the Korean People's Army.

March 13, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected a unit of the Korean People's Army (KPA) that defends the area around Mt. Jihye in the eastern sector of the front. Kim also visited a women's A.A.-machine gun battery under the unit and saw a performance given by the art propaganda squad of combined unit no. 313 of the KPA. Kim was accompanied by vice marshal Jon Jae Son, general Hyon Chol Hae and colonel general Ri Myong Su of the KPA, as well as vice-chairman Ri Yong Mu of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Ki Nam, secretaries, and Pak Song Bong and Ri Yong Chol, first vice department directors, of the Worker's Party of Korea Central Committee.

March 29, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the headquarters of KPA combined unit No. 324. Kim was accompanied by vice marshal Jo Myong Rok, director of the KPA General Political Department, vice marshal Kim Yong Chun, chief of the KPA general staff, general Hyon Chol Hae and staff members of the KPA supreme command.

March 30, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited various areas of north and south Hamgyong provinces, including the Sinhung Machine Plant, the Tanchon General Magnesia Plant, the construction site of Tanchon Port, the Hambuk Shipbuilding Complex, the June 5 General Electrical Factory and other industrial establishments. During his tour, Kim held a conference with officials of the Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex, the Songjin Steel Complex, the Musan Mining Complex, the Chongjin Railway Bureau and other industrial establishments. Kim was accompanied by chief secretary of the north Hamgyong provincial committee of the Worker's Party of Korea Ri Kun Mo, chief secretary of the south Hamgyong provincial committee of the WPK Ri Thae Nam, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Ki Nam and first vice department director of the WPK Central Committee Pak Song Bong.

April 5, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the headquarters of combined unit No. 567 of the Korean People's Army (KPA). Kim was joined by director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun and staff members of the KPA supreme command.

April 7, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il, chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission appeared on the platform at the 2nd session of the 10th Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang. Also present were Kim Yong Nam, Jo Myong Rok, Hong Song Nam, Ri Jong Ok, Pak Song Chol, Kim Yong Ju and other leading officials of the party and the state.

April 13, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il issued order no. 00114 to promote military ranks of KPA commanding officers on the threshold of Sun's Day. Ri Pyong Sam was promoted to a colonel general, Kwon Ok Phil and Kim Son Ju to lieutenant generals and Kim Tong In and 75 others to major generals. (Kim not necessarily present)

April 15, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited a KPA unit entitled Kum Song lifeguard defending Kaephung county (overlooking Kyodong and Kanghwa islands) to mark Sun's Day. Also present were Jo Myong Rok, director of the general political department of the KPA, Kim Yong Chun, chief of the general staff of the KPA, and staff members of the supreme command.

April 23, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il received first vice-chairman of the central standing committee of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon) So Man Sul.

April 25, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il, together with senior commanding officers of the army, visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace on Sunday, the 67th anniversary of the foundation of the Korean People's Army (KPA), to pay homage to the President Kim Il Sung. Kim was accompanied by Jo Myong Rok, director of the general political department of the KPA, KPA marshal Ri Ul Sol, Kim Yong Chun, chief of the general staff of the KPA, Kim Il Chol, Minister of the People's Armed Forces, vice-chairman Ri Yong Mu and member Yon Hyong Muk of the DPRK National Defence Commission, KPA vice marshals Paek Hak Rim, Kim Ik Hyon, Ri Ha Il, Jon Jae Son, Pak Ki So and Kim Ryong Yon, staff members of the supreme command and commanders of services and arms.

April 25, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited a unit under KPA unit no. 963 to congratulate the officers and men on the anniversary of the KPA. May 5, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the forward command post of unit no. 287 of the Korean People's Army. Kim was joined by vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission Ri Yong Mu and staff members of the KPA supreme command.

May 6, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il went round the fish farm of unit no. 1216 of the Korean People's Security Forces. He was accompanied by Ri Yong Mu, vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK, KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and general officers, as well as Jang Song Thaek, first vice department director of the WPK Central Committee.

May 7, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-site guidance to the rural mechanization in Kangwon Province. He went to readjusted paddy-fields to see tractors and other farm machines at work. Kim was joined by vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission Ri Yong Mu and general officers of the Korean People's Army, as well as secretary Kim Yong Sun and first vice department director Jang Song Thaek of the WPK Central Committee.

May 8, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il watched a light comedy "Comrade" performed by artistes of the April 25 Film Studio of the KPA. Also present were director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, Minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol, generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and general officers of the KPA, as well as Secretaries Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors Jang Song Thaek and Choe Chun Hwang of the WPK Central Committee.

May 11, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected Kum Song lifeguard A-A artillery unit no. 959 of the Korean People's Army. May 18, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected the military academy of tankmen and automobile drivers. Kim was joined by director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the general staff Kim Yong Chun, Minister of the People's Armed Forces Kim Il Chol, secretary Kim Kuk Thae and first vice department director Jang Song Thaek of the Worker's Party of Korea Central Committee.

May 19, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il watched an art performance given by dependents of military personnel of KPA units nos. 593 and 337 who participated in the second competition of art circle members of the dependents of the KPA officers to mark Sun's Day. Also present were director Jo Myong Rok of the general political department of the KPA, chief Kim Yong Chun of the general staff of the KPA, Kim Il Chol Minister of the People's Armed Forces and other general officers of the KPA.

May 28, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected guard Seoul Kim Chaek infantry division no. 4 of the Korean People's Army. Kim was joined by director of the general political department of the KPA Jo Myong Rok, chief of the general staff of the KPA Kim Yong Chun and staffers of the KPA supreme command.

May 31, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected unit no. 833 of the Korean People's Army.

May 31 (?), 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il enjoyed an art performance by the families of the soldiers who are on active service at units nos. 526 and 264 of the Korean People's Army who took a part in the 2nd art contest of servicemen's families held to mark Sun's Day.

June 17, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited several sites in Jagang Province, including the Hyangha Revolutionary Site, the Jangjagang Power Station, the Kanggye Youth Power Station, the Janggang Kunmin Youth Power Station no.3, the Pukchon Power Station no.2, the Amnokgang Tire Plant, the Kanggye Tractor Complex, the Kosan Co-op Farm in Mapho city, the Janggang County Township Co-op Farm, and the Mapho Cocoon Farm. Joining Kim were chief secretary of the Jagang provincial committee of the WPK Yon Hyong Muk, secretary Jon Pyong Ho and first vice department directors Pak Song Bong, Ri Yong Chol and Choe Chun Hwang of the WPK Central Committee.

June 28, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-the-spot guidance to the Phunghwa and Chonsam cooperative farms in Anbyon county, Kangwon Province. Kim was joined by Ri Yong Mu, vice-chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, and general officers of the Korean People's Army, as well as Ri Yong Chol and Jang Song Thaek, first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee.

June 29, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected unit no. 409 of the Korean People's Army. Kim was accompanied by director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun and staff members of the KPA supreme command, as well as first vice department directors of the Worker's Party of Korea Central Committee Ri Yong Chol and Jang Song Thaek.

July 8, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the Kumsusan Memorial Palace on the national day of the deepest mourning, to pay homage to the President Kim Il Sung. Kim was accompanied by Kim Yong Nam, Jo Myong Rok, Hong Song Nam and other senior party and state officials, members and alternate members of the WPK Central Committee, leading officials of the party, armed forces and power bodies, commission and ministries of the cabinet, national institutions and public organisations and generals of the KPA.

July 8, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il attended a national memorial service is held solemnly at the plaza of the Kumsusan Memorial Palace. Joining Kim on the platform were Kim Yong Nam, Jo Myong Rok, Hong Song Nam and other senior party and state officials, anti-Japanese revolutionary veterans and leading officials of the party and armed forces organs, working people's organisations and national institutions.

July 13, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il guided land rezoning in North Phyongan Province. July 28, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited Kum Song lifeguard unit no. 155 of the KPA Navy, marking the 46th anniversary of the Korean people's victory in the Fatherland Liberation War. Kim was joined by generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and general officers of the KPA, as well as secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, member of the WPK Central Military Commission and first vice department director of the WPK Central Committee Ri Yong Chol and member and first vice department director of the WPK Central Committee Jang Song Thaek.

August 12, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-the-spot guidance to the Hongam branch of the Taehongdan county integrated farm and the Mubong workers district in Samjiyon county, Ryanggang Province. Kim was joined by Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, secretaries of the WPK Central Committee, and Jang Song Thaek, first vice department director of the party central committee.

August 19, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the fish farm managed by Ra Hyo Jin. Kim was joined by secretaries of the central committee of the WPK Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, members of the party central committee and generals of the Korean People's Army (KPA) Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong.

August 23, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited a newly-built poultry farm. Kim was joined by secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun, chairman of the Party Central Control Commission Pak Yong Sok and first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee Jang Song Thaek and Choe Chun Hwang, as well as generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong, Col. August 30, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected KPA unit no. 635, a winner of the "O Jung Hup 7th Regiment" title on Monday. Kim was accompanied by KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and staff members of the KPA supreme command, as well as secretary Kim Kuk Thae and first vice department directors Ri Yong Chol and Jang Song Thaek of the WPK Central Committee.

September 1, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the fish farm of the Fish Culture Station managed by Cha Ju Hyon. September 22-24, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave on-the-spot guidance to the industrial field of South Hamgyong Province, visiting the Sinhung Machinery Plant, the June 1 Youth General Electric Appliances Plant, the Hamhung Disabled Soldiers' Plastic Daily Necessities Plant, Songchongang Power Station no. 22, the Hamhung Songchongang Garment Factory, the Sinhung Fish Farm, the Sinhung Pleasure Ground and other factories and enterprises.

September 30, 1999: Kim Jong Il met with Chung Ju Young in Pyongyang.

October 6, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected unit no. 507 of the Korean People's Army. Kim also saw an art performance given by an art propaganda squad of KPA combined unit no. 549. October 12, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il saw an art performance of the merited choir of the KPA to mark the 54th anniversary of the WPK. October 12, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected an island-defending unit that belongs to unit no. 1130 of the Korean People's Army on Tuesday. Kim was joined by generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and staff members of the Supreme Command of the KPA.

October 14, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the Kwangmyongsong saltern newly built on Kumya bay in the east coast of Korea. Kim was joined by secretaries Kim Kuk Thae, Kim Ki Nam and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors Ri Yong Chol, Jang Song Thaek and Choe Chun Hwang of the WPK Central Committee, as well as chief secretary of the south Hamgyong provincial committee of the WPK Ri Thae Nam, chairman of the south Hamgyong provincial people's committee Kim Phung Gi and other senior officials of the province and the saltern.

October 17, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected unit no. 1224 of the Korean People's Army (KPA). Kim was joined by vice Marshals Jo Myong Rok, Kim Yong Chun and Kim Il Chol and general officers of the KPA, as well as secretaries Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors of the party central committee.

October 28, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il gave personal guidance to the foodstuff factory managed by Om Ul Yong that produces soy sauce, bean paste, seasoning, oil, butter, noodle, confectionery and other foodstuffs. Kim was joined by vice Marshals Jo Myong Rok, Kim Yong Chun and Kim Il Chol and general officers of the Korean People's Army, as well as secretaries Kim Kuk Thae, Kim Ki Nam and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors of the Central Committee of the WPK.

November 18, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected unit no. 715 of the Korean People's Army. Kim was joined by vice marshals Jo Myong Rok, Kim Yong Chun, Kim Il Chol and Jon Jae Son and general officers of the Korean People's Army and staff members of the KPA supreme command. Kim also watched a performance given by the art propaganda squad of KPA combined unit no. 313.

November 19 (?), 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il enjoyed an art performance given by the youth mobile propaganda squad of the Korean People's Army. Also present were director of the general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the general staff Kim Yong Chun, generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and general officers of the Korean People's Army as well as officers and men of the KPA, as well as secretaries Kim Ki Nam and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors Ri Yong Chol and Jang Song Thaek of the WPK Central Committee.

November 29, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected Kum Song lifeguard unit no. 775 of the KPA. Kim was joined by vice marshal Jo Myong Rok, director of the general political department of the KPA, vice marshal Kim Yong Chun, chief of the general staff of the KPA, vice marshal Kim Il Chol, Minister of the People's Armed Forces, generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong, col. general Ri Myong Su and staff members of the supreme command of the KPA.

December 5, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited a fish farm newly built by KPA unit no. 583. Kim was joined by member of the DPRK National Defence Commission Yon Hyong Muk, secretary of the WPK Central Committee Kim Ki Nam, KPA generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and first vice department directors of the WPK Central Committee Pak Song Bong, Jang Song Thaek and Choe Chun Hwang.

December 6, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected Kum Song lifeguard unit no. 776 of the Korean People's Army. Kim was joined by director of the KPA general political department Jo Myong Rok, chief of the KPA general staff Kim Yong Chun, and staff members of the supreme command of the KPA.

December 12, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il visited the Ryongjong branch of the Ryongyon county integrated farm in South Hwanghae Province. Kim was joined by secretaries Kim Ki Nam and Kim Yong Sun and first vice department directors Ri Yong Chol, Pak Song Bong and Jang Song Thaek of the WPK Central Committee.

December 23, 1999: General Secretary Kim Jong Il inspected KPA unit no. 488. Kim was joined by generals Hyon Chol Hae and Pak Jae Gyong and other general officers of the KPA.
