To those who have never heard of this paradise, the Drakensberg is a mountain range in South Africa, on the eastern border of Lesotho. For close on 200km this ridge of towering basalts snakes its way south from Royal Natal National Park to the rolling hills of Sehlabathebe Park in Lesotho. Only a few isolated valleys have any human settlement, and the vast majority is an untamed wilderness, filled with homely valleys, high exposed plateau's and ancient forest. This is still the domain of nature, and she abounds in a profusion not often seen, and almost disconcerting in exuberance. There is so much that I could tell of these mountains, of the flowers, birds and trees. Of the ancient lava flows, and San inhabitants and their art. I could lyrically carry on (try little berg river or high berg for some over lyrical sentimentality), about many trips into the heart of this wild place, of adventures alone (here is the Ifidi Solo Story), and hikes with friends where not even the peaks soared as high as my spirits. It's a magical lands, brimming with a history and pristineness not found in any other range I know.
