(Fiction)
“....watch me mommy, watch me...”, the little girl shouts out, in joy at her first time riding her bike all on her own.
“I can see you sweetie, your doing great!!....”, her mother exclaims in overwhelming pride while looking on from the front steps of their home. “Be careful to stay off the street now honey, the cars out there are dangerous!”
“I will mommy! I will...”, she shouts back. “I will make mommy proud of me...”, she speaks under her breath. “Watch me mommy... i’m big enough to go onto the street...see mommy!”, she turns to her mommy and calls out with glee.
“Honey come back here to momm... AMANDA!!! GET OFF THE ROAD!!!!.....”, her mother shrieks out in a voice that the child has never heard from her mothers lips before.
The child looks back toward the road as something shiny blinds her. Suddenly she feels as if she weighs nothing, as if she were an angel taking to flight she feels her body rise above the ground and fly back. The ground races below her as her flight takes her farther and farther back until suddenly coming to an abrupt stop.
Her bones crumble within her as she settles to the concrete ground. Her eye sight fails her and the world grows dark all around.
She tries to move her broken body as she begins to see light returning to her eyes but her legs won't work for her. Her sight comes back to her in time to see her mother running from their house toward her with a face that is ghost white and dripping with tears. She hears the panic in her mothers frantic voice and she tries to call out to calm her, ‘I’m alright mommy, i’m alright!...don’t worry...’, but the words don’t leave her lips, they come to her mind but she can't say them aloud.
Again the child tries to pick herself up, but her arms and legs don’t answer her attempts to move. The child’s mother collapses beside the young girl and pulls her broken body into her shivering arms.
‘I’m alright mommy, please don’t cry... i’m alright...’, but her lips don’t echo the thoughts that fill her mind.
“... o god, please don’t take my daughter from me too...”, the mother cries out in agony.
“...call an ambulance hurry!!!”, a voice screams out.
The child can see her mother holding her tightly but she can't feel the warmth of her mothers touch. The child’s body begins to fill with a cold sensation starting in her feet and rising through her tattered body. ‘Mommy what’s happening?... Mommy!?....’, the child cries out but the thoughts go unanswered by her voice as her mothers tears continue to fall upon her once rosie red cheeks.
‘Help me mommy!!’, she screams out inside, as her body begins to feel numb all over and the cold begins to grow unbearable within her tiny, fragile body.
Sirens echo with-in the child’s now bleeding ears. Growing louder and louder, she tries to look around but can't turn her head to see where the sounds are coming from. The sirens grow defening to her sensitive ears and then without warning stop suddenly. Behind her mother the child sees men running toward her urgently, she can see the men are saying something but her ears have started to grow as silent as her lips.
Her mother lays her down on the bloody concrete as the men come closer, ‘...don’t go...don’t leave me... please mommy!?!...’, the child tries to grab for her mothers still shivering outstretched hands, but as hard as she tries her arms don’t obey her commands.
The child now laying on her back tries to look around but her eyes don’t move for her, a man comes into her vision now and again and approaches as if to kiss her, but her faded blue lips feel no sensation of the touch. As the man moves outside of her vision she sees the sky above her, ‘...a pretty day...’, she considers to herself. The blue of the cloudless sky seems so intense to her, more then it has ever before. A flock of birds crosses the sky far above her, ‘....I wish I could fly...’, she thinks as the man appears in her vision and covers her view of the sky and the birds overhead, ‘...no! don’t... I want to see...’. Panic comes to her thoughts once again, ‘WHERE”S MY MOMMY!?!?!...’, she tries once again to look around but to no avail. The man moves away again and the brilliance of the blue sky distracts her thoughts and gives her a sense of peace among all the panic that wants to dominate her mind.
Another bird comes into sight and flies above her, this one closer now. Her mind is thrilled by the brilliant red belly of the small bird as it circles above. Her sight suddenly begins to grow dark as if day were turning suddenly to night, ‘...no! don’t... I want to see...’, she repeats herself as her sight fades to a cold empty blackness that she feels compelled to run from, but she can't get away.
Out of the ink black darkness a light seemingly brighter then the sun yet not hurting her eyes appears. She feels herself moving forward into the light, ‘...its heaven...’, she thinks to herself, ‘its just how mommy and Father Nicolas said it was for daddy when he left mommy and me...’, she sees two large gates in front of her and without a moments hesitation she feels herself move through the gates, ‘...mommy...i’m going to see daddy....’, she exclaims with joy, ‘...i’m going to where daddy is...’, she continues to move across the pillowy cloud like ground and then suddenly without warning, it all disappears... ‘MOMMY!?........
....The paramedic’s look at each other, fighting the tears back that they both feel within them. “...even if we could bring her back now she would be brain dead...its been 10 minutes Jason...”, one of the paramedics says, the other just nods and lowers his head trying to compose himself as first paramedic slowly rises and looks the grief stricken mother in the eyes. Eyes that beg the paramedic to justify why he has stopped trying to save her young angels life, “...I’m...sorry...”, the paramedic whispers and yet the words echo in the mothers mind and heart as if it were screamed at her.
“....no...no!...”, shaking her head back and forth,”....NOOOOO!!!!!!!... GOD NO!, don’t take her from me too...”, the mother cries out as she collapses beside her child and pulls her limp cold body into her arms. “Noo...Amanda no...”, she whispers into her child’s ear, to quiet for any but her child to hear, hopeing for some sign... some responce to show that her love is not truly lost... but her words go unanswered.
Tears swell in the eyes of the onlookers that have collected at the tragic scene as the mother holds her child tightly in her arms as if to try and hold the fragile life of the child within from leaving.
A neighbor crouches beside the young mother. With tears falling from her cheeks she puts her arms around the mother and child, and speaks slowly and with an unsteady voice, “...she's in a better place now Krista, she’s with her father in heaven...she’s in a better place...”.
The mother not looking up or opening her tear soaked eyes slowly nods her head once as she continues to hold her child in her loving arms without any intent to ever let go.... |
