"
During the court meeting of 27 September (1780) Robert Mead came forward
to post bond for his appearance at the next court. Once again he
said or done something that resulted in a charge of loyalism. He
posted a £20,000 bond with Archelaus Moon, William Moon, and John Hook as
securities.
Mead was lost in the shuffle, however, when the
court next convened on 30 September and 2 October. Eleven men,
including John Bradshaw, Richard Bundy, Randolph Richeson, Thomas Watts,
Rowland Wheeler, and Joseph Wilson pleaded guilty to taking an oath of
loyalty to the king and administering it to others. All were
remanded to jail pending their trial before the General Court.
Robert Mead's case did not come before the court. By 1786 Bundy,
Hunt, Richeson, and Watts were living in present-day Franklin
County. Perhaps they were part of the nest of loyalists living on
Blackwater River during the war.
.......
After the frenzy of accusations and trials near
the end of 1780, the loyalist threat in Bedford County appears to have
subsided. If the harsh response of the county court toward its
"disaffected" citizens had not conciliated them, it had at least
elicited their surly silence." |
