REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD
31 Jan 1779 British take Augusta & Sunbury.
14 Feb 1779 Battle of Kettle Creek.
April 1781 Colonel Elijah Clarke & General Pickens began a siege of Augusta.
Augusta falls on June 5, 1781, freeing upcountry Georgia of the British.
General Elijah Clark was born in Edgecombe County, N. C., in 1733 and
moved to what was then a part of Wilkes County, Georgia, (now an area
of Lincoln) in 1774. When the Revolutionary War broke out he became a
colonel of militia.

including all or part of the present day counties of Banks, Barrow,
Clarke, Franklin, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, & Stephens.

LAND LOTTERIES [ This is an excellent source ]
Only Georgia held land lotteries to convey former Indian lands to
eligible persons (citizens of Georgia) whose names were drawn randomly.
Those lotteries serve as excellent substitutes for the lost 1790, 1800,
and 1810 federal census records.
1805 1st Georgia Land Lottery Lotteries were also held in 1807, 1820, 1821,
1827, 1832, and 1833.
1816 Fort Gaines established (across the River from what is now Franklin,
Henry County, Alabama. One of several forts on Georgia's western frontier for
the protection of white settlers. Fort Gaines was established in 1816 by order
of Gen. Edmund P. Gaines. The fort stood on the brow of the bluff just below
the confluence of Town Branch with Chemochechobee Creek in Clay Co, Georgia.
Hartwell TARVER was one of the first settlers in Fort Gaines.
INDIAN REMOVAL ERA
1825 Treaty Of Indian Springs Creek Chief William McIntosh agreed to cede all
Lower Creek land to Georgia.

Rev. Silas Emmett Lucas ISBN# 0-89308-017-9
General James Edward Oglethorpe, the founder of the Colony of
Georgia, landed at Yamacraw Bluff in present Savannah in 1733. From
that time until 1752 all lands were granted to the settlers "in
tall male." This simply meant that lands were allotted and were not
to be sold or mortgaged or willed to any persons except a male
heir. In case there was no male heir, the lands reverted to the
Trustees who established the colony.
In 1752, the Trustees relinquished their charter to King George II
of England. By 1756, the Provincial Government having been organized,
land grants were issued with no restrictions. The grants in the
Georgia Surveyor General Department, a part of the Office of the
Secretary of State, begin in 1756 and were made by King George II
and King George II until the Revolutionary War.
While the Revolutionary War was still in progress, the General
Assembly of Georgia passed two Acts relating to the granting of land,
but until 1782 the State was overrun and occupied by the British and
the government was so disorganized that the necessary official
machinery for surveying and granting land was never perfected. As a
result, both of those Acts became ineffectual, and are referred to
here only as a matter of historical interest. The first of these was
the Act of Jun 7, 1777 (as amended by the Act of September 16, 1777),
entitled "An Act for opening a land office and for the better settling
and strengthening this State"; the second was the Act of January 23,
1780, entitled "An Act for the more speedy and effectual settling an
strengthening this State." Actually, only a very few surveys were
ever made under those Acts and the first grant of land based on any
of such surveys was not signed and issued until October 22, 1783.
Neither Act provided for a fee-simple grant, but both followed the
Colonial requirement for the annual payment of rent of two shillings
on each hundred acres in the grant, in addition to settlement and
cultivations within nine months. However, both Acts recognized the
fact that many Colonial and State records had been lost or destroyed
during the War and stipulated that, despite their loss, those persons
who could produce some proof of an application for survey, or an
agreement to purchase, or settlement under any Colonial law or grant,
would be entitled to confirming grants. One feature of both Acts,
which was followed in every subsequent Act, was that a man would be
entitled to 200 acres as his own head-right plus an additional 50
acres for his wife, each child and each slave, but that in no event
could the total grant exceed 1000 acres.
The first effective land Act was the Act of February 17, 1783.
The Act of February 25, 1784, which was passed primarily to
create and open up Franklin and Washington Counties, made some revisions
in the grant laws theretofore enacted.

from " DONE AT HARRINGTON'S " by C. Frank Williamson - Vol 4, No. 3
[evidently from an Arkansas Historical publication]
The name of John Harrington's father is not known with certainty, although some
evidence obtained from the deed records of Franklin County, Georgia, indicates that
he may have been Thomas Harrington of North Carolina. This Thomas Harrington, who
was dead by 1790, also had a son named Thomas, and there are some indications that
the son, Thomas, was possibly the brother of John. They were both in Franklin County,
Georgia., at the same time, and John Harrington, after he had moved to Kentucky,
granted a power of attorney to Thomas Harrington to convey some of John's land lying
in Franklin County, Georgia. Thomas, incidentally did not go to Kentucky with John,
but remained in Franklin County, Georgia, where his name appears on the tax lists as
late as 1815. In any event, in 1782 John Harrington can definitely be placed in
Wilkes County, Georgia. "Early Records of Georgia", Vols. 1 & 2, p. 42, discloses
that on October 27, 1782, John Harrrington inventoried and appraised the estate of a
decedent in Wilkes County. In 1784 Franklin County, Georgia, was created, and John
Harrington was among its earliest citizens. Information in the Georgia Dept. of
Archives and History, Atlanta, Georgia, disclosed that as of September 26, 1792,
John Harrington was a Major in the Franklin County, Georgia, Militia Regiment.
It would appear from records so far discovered that John Harrington's military
title of Major derived from his rank in the militia of Franklin County, rather than
from service in the Revolution or War of 1812. Of the total of 111,000 acres of
land received by John Harrington in Franklin County, Georgia, and much smaller
grants in Wilkes and Washington counties, Georgia, virtually all had been sold by
him by early 1794, and he had moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky.

UPDATE: It is now thought that this was not Sarah SHIPMAN married
to Thomas b. 1741. Some of us think she was married to the
Thomas who died 1789 Rutherford Co, NC and that she moved
to Logan Co, KY after 1799. So these two Sarahs are still
in question. Consequently I have amended this to reflect
that ambiguity.

My understanding is that JMH, his father Jeptha as well as his
grandfather Drury are all buried at Pinewood in unmarked graves.
Drury and jeptha had been buried in Lannet, AL (Chambers Co) but
were moved in the early 1900's - or maybe that's just what was
said when really the graves were just built over. I strongly
suspect that JMH is buried (along with his wife) next to his
daughter who died in childbirth in 1869.

I list a John Madison Harrington who was born March 3, 1811 SC;
however, the marriage I show for him was to a Teresa Smith. I could
be in error, or he may have married Teresa Smith (2).
