TIMELINE
1729 South Carolina was officially separated from North Carolina, although
boundaries between the states remained unstable, and North Carolina
granted some land in South Carolina. The North Carolina counties of
Anson, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rutherford, and Tyron have records that
pertain to South Carolina residents.
1731 Royal land grants issued for the years 1731 to 1775 often pertain to
the four original districts of Colleton, Craven, Berkeley, and
Granville.
1760- 1761 The Cherokee War ended in a treaty that opened the up country for
settlement. The Bounty Act of 1761 offered public land tax free for
ten years, and settlers from other colonies began pouring into the up
country.
1769 Seven original judicial districts were established, but records
continued to be kept in Charleston until 1780. ( Camden, Cheraws,
Georgetown, Charleston, Beaufort, Orangeburg, & 96th District )
Southern Campaign of American Revolution
May 1780 Battle of Fort Sullivan (later Fort Moultrie)/Sullivan's Island at the
main entrance to Charleston Harbor, South Carolina
7 Oct 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain
Location: Blacksburg, SC (York and Cherokee Counties, South Carolina)
This battle was a significant victory by American Patriots over American Loyalists
which destroyed the left wing of Cornwallis' army and effectively ended Loyalist
ascendance in the Carolinas. The victory halted the British advance into North
Carolina, forced Lord Cornwallis to retreat from Charlotte into South Carolina,
and gave General Nathanael Greene the opportunity to reorganize the American Army.
NOTE: In 1710 York County was part of the CRAVEN DISTRICT. By 1769 it was part of
the CAMDEN DISTRICT and the OLD 96TH DISTRICT.
1788 South Carolina became a state.

Some notes on the 1790 Census
DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN THE THOMAS'ES
A. The Thomas b. 1690 who married Mary Whitmel died c1744.
B. The Thomas b. 1716 who married Hanna Haynie would have been 74 in 1790, and
it's doubtful he would have still had 2 sons under age 16 living at home.
C. The Thomas b. 1741 who married Sarah _______ was living 1793 Franklin Co, GA,
and he received land grant in Franklin Co, GA in 1789. He is the one I
think was probably enumerated 1790 in Parish Prince Frederick, in the
Georgetown District of SC.
D. So who was the Thomas Herringdine enumerated 1790 in Cheraw District??
He had one son under age 16 (born 1774-1790) and one daughter of
unspecified age. Thus we can theorize that he was born 1753 or before.
There was a Silas Heringdine who died 1770 whose will was
probated in Craven County, SC. who named a son Thomas. Craven County
was discontinued in 1769 and the Cheraws District was created in
1769 from Craven. Cheraws District was split in 1798 to form
Chesterfield, Darlington, and Marlborough Districts in upper SC.

Letter from William Bull to the Assembly:
I have received certain Information that the Creek Indians of the Upper Nation
have lately murdered upwards of Twenty of the English Traders among them, a few
only are supposed to have made their Escape to the Albama Fort, and Pensecola,
and some of them have reach’d Augusta; From whence, and places adjacent, the
Inhabitants are retiring and coming into the interior parts of this Province for
their Protection against the Incursions of the Creek Indians, with whom a War
seems unavoidable; And as there is reason to apprehend, that they now are, and
will be aided by the French, from their Settlements on the Missisippi, The War
with them will soon become as general and more formidable, than it now is with
the Cherokees; It is therefore necessary that all possible Measures should be
concerted and prosecuted for preventing as much as may be the fatal and
dangerous Consequences which such a War is likely to produce.

(sold to John COOK, 1741/42)

1735 1,227 acres Berkley, St. Johns
1736 1,227 acres Berkley, St. Johns

1740 1,227 acres Berkley
1741 1,227 acres Berkley
1742 not listed
All of the above is listed as lands granted by the late, Lords
Proprietors.
Two days before Sampson BALL registered his Memorial he sold 500 acres
to John COOK. This tract of land appears to be the same 500 acres
granted to William BALL 23 July 1711, thus Sampson BALL inherited all of
his father's real estate (1,227 acres). The above shows that he contined
to pay Quit Rent on 1,227 acres from 1734-1741. The Quit Rent volumes
between 1742 and 1760 are missing.

St Mark's Parish Formed 1757
(As I understand it this was in Craven County in 1745 ????)
The earliest settlers who came into the future Sumter County were nominally in Prince Frederick's
Parish, but the parish church was many miles away, near Georgetown on the coast. The line which
separated St. Mark's from Prince Frederick's was an extension of the northwest line of Williamsburg
Township to the Santee and Pee Dee Rivers. St. Mark's embraced all of the area between those rivers,
northward to the North Carolina line, and was the largest of the parishes. The whole of St. Mark's
parish was included in Camden District which extended from the northwest line of Williamsburg
Township to the North Carolina line and from Lynches River to the Santee-Congaree-Broad river system.
